During the early 1850s, tribes signed treaties ceding (handing title to) their lands to the federal government in exchange for certain rights and benefits. This resulted in over 2,000 Indians being removed from their homelands in January-March 1856 and marched to the (original) Grand Ronde Indian Reservation (shown in red). Those from Table Rock in southern Oregon marched more than 200 miles over the course of 33 days that winter. Oregon More than 27 bands and tribes were combined into what is now the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The seven treaties that were ratified are the Rogue River Treaty of 1853 and Rogue River Treaty of 1854 (shown in orange), Cow Creek Treaty of 1853 (shown in blue), Umpqua and Kalapuya Treaty of 1854 (shown in yellow), Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855 (shown in green), Chasta Costa Treaty of 1854 (shown in purple), and Molalla Treaty of 1855 (shown in brown). In addition to the lands ceded by ratified treaties (outlined in black), the usual and accustomed areas (cross-hatched in white) and aboriginal homelands (cross-hatched in orange) are important to the Tribe. California Currently under construction at Chachalu is a kiosk dedicated to the Tribal homelands of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Once completed the kiosk will have the above information and more. We hope to see you soon at Chachalu.
