Marketplace seeking
vendors for waiting list
The Tribal Elders Committee is the new governing body of the
Grand Ronde Tribal member Marketplace held the fi rst weekend of
every month at Spirit Mountain Casino.
If you are a Grand Ronde Tribal member who would like a chance
to sell your crafts, the committee would like to place your name on
a waiting list of possible vendors.
There will be a meeting at noon Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Elders
Activity Center for current vendors. If you are interested in being a
vendor, you are encouraged to attend. There is, however, no guar-
antee that you will become a vendor.

Grand Ronde Royalty
Royalty participants and their parent or sponsor must attend all re-
quired events (powwows, parades, fundraisers, organizational meetings
and others). Absences can be prearranged with the Royalty Coordinator.
Three unexcused absences will result in disqualifi cation from Royalty.
Royalty participants are expected to stay for the duration of the events.
This includes helping set up for events, such as meetings and parades,
as well as dancing during Grand Entry, InterTribals and staying until
the fl ags are retired unless pre-approved with the Royalty Coordinator.
Participants are expected to speak in front of large groups of people.
Royalty participants must be willing and able to dance. Remember:
You are all part of a team and are expected to treat yourselves,
running mates and others with respect at all times.
GRAND RONDE ROYALTY COURT
Participating in Royalty Court is an excellent opportunity for Tribal girls and
young women to learn our traditions and powwow protocol. Participants
represent the Tribe by attending powwows and various community events.
We encourage all young woman ages 5-18 to join. Participants must
provide their regalia.
Serving on Royalty Court requires a considerable commitment from the
participant and her sponsor; travel, fundraisers, classes and meetings are
required for all competing participants.
Little Miss Grand Ronde — 5-10 years of age
Junior Miss Grand Ronde — 11-14 years of age
Senior Miss Grand Ronde — 15-18 years of age
General Requirements:
1. Enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal member
2. Must be alcohol and drug free
3. Never married, no children
5. Attend school regularly and be in good standing
6. Sign and comply with Royalty Guidelines and Agreement

Tribal K-9 Offi cer Nixwa helps
Yamhill County in drug arrest

Tribal K-9 Offi cer Nixwa assisted
the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Offi ce
on the evening of Wednesday, Jan.
7, helping to confi scate more than
$16,000 in marijuana, metham-
phetamine and cash.

at the intersection of Main and
Lamson streets in Willamina at
10:17 p.m.
Druery contacted the driver and
suspected that controlled substanc-
es were inside the car. He contacted
the Grand Ronde Tribal Police
Department, and Nixwa, a Belgian
Malinois, and Police Offi cer Patrick
McConnell were dispatched to the
scene.
Nixwa sniffed the vehicle and
alerted for the presence of drugs,
which turned out to be six pounds
of marijuana and approximately
1.4 grams of meth. There also was
$873 in cash inside the car.
The car’s driver, Darren Andrew
Meinert, 29, of California was ar-
rested for delivery and possession
of marijuana and possession of
meth. He was lodged in the Yamhill
County Jail with a bail of $15,000.
Last April, McConnell and Nix-
wa received certifi cation from the
National Police Canine Association
in Tucson, Ariz. They were certifi ed
for narcotics detection and patrol
apprehension.
“When we returned to Oregon,”
McConnell said, “the decision was
made to use Nixwa as a narcotic
detection K-9 only.”
Nixwa also received certifi cation
from the Oregon Police Canine As-
sociation in early November.
Nixwa is trained to detect the
odors of meth, cocaine, heroin or
any derivatives of those narcotics.
He presents a passive alert, mean-
ing he sits when he detects one or
more of the odors. Since June 2014,
Nixwa has been deployed eight
times and assisted in seven arrests,
which resulted in the seizing of
more than $17,000 in illegal drugs,
McConnell said.
“Nixwa is just getting started
with working on keeping drugs out
of our community and assisting
other agencies with keeping drugs
out of their communities,” McCon-
nell said.
“Unfortunately, this will become
more and more common with the
upcoming legalization of marijuana
in our state,” said Yamhill County
Sheriff Tim Svenson. “Criminals will
be attempting to abuse the system
any way they can to make a profi t.
Whether it is medical marijuana or
legalized marijuana, it will be a chal-
lenge to police the black market sales
and keep money from being diverted
to illicit enterprises.” n
