Helping Hand awards
Spirit Mountain Community Fund annually chooses two indi-
viduals to receive the Ye? lan Lima (Helping Hand) awards: one
non-management staff member and one volunteer who are recog-
nized for their outstanding service within the nonprofit communi-
ty. This year, Miguel Lazaro, indigenous community educator at
Farmworker Housing Development Corp. in Woodburn, won the
staff member award and Calvin Bair, a volunteer with “I Have a
Dream” Oregon, was chosen to receive the volunteer award. On
Thursday, Dec. 18, Community Fund Director Kathleen George
and Program Coordinator Louis King visited both to present the
awards.

On Monday, Dec. 15, Alex Simshaw, Veterans of Foreign Wars District
16 commander, front row third from left, and Wayne Miller, VFW
Post 4015 commander and District 16 chief of staff, front row second
from right, presented Tribal Council with a plaque as a thank you for
a $1,000 sponsorship for the VFW’s Voice of Democracy educational
scholarship. There to accept the plaque was Tribal Council Vice Chair
Jack Giffen Jr., front row left, Tribal Council member Cheryle A.
Kennedy, front row second from left, Tribal Council Chairman Reyn
Leno, front row third from right, and Tribal Council member Denise
Harvey, front row right, as well as, second row from left, Tribal Council
Secretary Toby McClary and Tribal Council members Jon A. George and
Ed Pearsall.
Royalty seeking past

All previous Grand Ronde Royalty queens and princesses are being
sought as the current Royalty Court is trying to compile a picture and
biography collection of current and all past Royalty for the Chachalu Mu-
seum & Cultural Center.
“It would be great to have any past pictures and dates that you were on
Royalty Court, as well as a short bio of who you are,” said Royalty Coor-
dinator Jackie Manyhides.

West Valley district
seeking Fire Explorers
The West Valley Fire District, which covers Grand Ronde, Willamina
and Sheridan, is seeking youths for its Fire Explorer Program.
Young men and women age 14 to 20 will become familiar with career
opportunities in the fire service through classroom instruction, hands-
on training and volunteer work. The program encourages and promotes
accountability, safety, communication, teamwork, fitness and leadership.
Participants must attend weekly drills from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays,
adhere to dress and conduct codes, perform weekly physical fitness and
training specific to firefighting skills, and demonstrate a willingness to
make improvements and show self-motivation.
