EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
Looking for scholarships?
There are numerous scholarship opportunities offered for students to apply to
each year. The majority of scholarships for fall term/semester are due between
January and April of each year. The Tribal Higher Education programs are here
to assist you in your application process. If you use a scholarship search site, be
sure to read the privacy policy to ensure you are using a site that will not sell your
contact information. A recommended search site to use is www.kaarme.com.
December 2014 chxi– pulakHli
Youth Activity Nights, chxi-pulakHli, are for 6th-12th grade YED Youth. Wednesdays in the gym from 5-
7:00pm and Thursdays in the Youth Education Building from 5-7:00pm. This month we are offering two
(2) on-site cultural activities that will be held in varying locations (see dates below). Beginning the week
of Dec..21 to January 4, no activity nights that week. No meal on cultural nights. Dinner and raffle
drawings on Dec. 18– MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN!
Weather pending (i.e. snow, ice or equivalent), activities will be shortened or cancelled with appropriate

Important notice to
full-time students
All full-time students must submit verifi cation that they have
applied to a scholarship outside the Tribe before funding will be
released for the term/semester. Verifi cation can include a scholar-
ship award or denial letter, e-mail verifi cation that an application
was submitted, a copy of the application or the fi nancial aid award
letter that lists an outside scholarship. Please contact Education at
1-800-422-0232, ext. 2275, if you have any questions. n
CTGR Higher Education
Program deadlines set
There are now only two Higher Education programs depending on wheth-
er you are full-time or part-time. The deadline for the Full-Time College
program is at least 30 days before the start of classes. The deadline for
the Part-Time College program is at least 10 days before the start of class.

Movie Time @ the Library: Movie Time will be discontinued on
Tuesday evenings after December due to other family events being
offered on this night by the Education Department.
Donations: Many thanks to everyone who made contributions to the
library collection in 2014. We received more than 1,500 donated items
this year, with about half of them added to the collection. We appreciate
the generosity of our community members and friends from other areas.

Reminder: Donated items must be clean and in good condition.
Inter-Library Loan services: The Tribal Library partners with
Oregon State Library to offer “library to library” inter-library loan ser-
vices. By completing the inter-library loan form, library patrons may
request items from the Oregon State Library collection. Items will be
couriered to and from the Tribal Library. OSL lending policies apply
for return of items.
Book Review: “Before I Fall”
Lauren Oliver is the writer of “Before I Fall.” She was raised in West-
chester, N.Y. Her parents are both literature professors and she has
been making up stories for as long as she can remember.
She started school at the University of Chicago, studying literature
and philosophy. She then returned to New York and attended New York
University’s MFA program for creative writing. She worked at Penguin
Books for a few years before leaving in 2009 to begin writing full-time.
Oliver is also the writer of “Delirium,” which I reviewed earlier in the year.
“Before I Fall” is about a high school girl, Samantha, who relives the
same day for a week. After the fi rst day, she spends every day after
that trying to better herself and make sure that it ends exactly how
she thinks it should and not how it does the fi rst night, with her death.
Throughout, Samantha takes on her best friends, makes friends with her
worst enemy, breaks up with her longtime crush and boyfriend, and gets
together with her oldest friend. In the end, this novel doesn’t conclude
exactly how you think it would, especially because she does everything
she can to make sure that she and the people in her life are safe.
I would defi nitely recommend this novel. Oliver is a wonderful writer
and she leaves you wanting more. This novel keeps you on your toes the
whole time and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next. This
novel also is kind of frustrating because you think Samantha made all
the right choices, but, bam, something happens that you never expect-
ed. — Jade Colton
