Chachalu Entry Columns
Chachalu’s Entry Columns have been completed and are
currently on informal display within Chachalu.
In the upcoming year they will be installed, welcoming
visitors to our Museum and Cultural Center. An unveiling
and blessing event will soon be announced.
These two cedar columns are adorned with
traditional basketry patterns to represent both
tradition and change of the Grand Ronde people.
The concentric circles represent the prior
mythological times coming together to form the
rim of a hazel basket, and how past experiences
often work to define what we become. The
chevron pattern on the opposite side is a
reoccurring theme in both basketry and carving
traditions. In this case, the simple act of stripping
away material creates a strong image, that is
representative of the material itself in one of its
prior forms, an ancestor, and staple of daily life for
our traditional people, the cedar tree.
