Salem woman wins mystery jackpot at casino Danette Curry, 41, of Salem hit the Classic Slot Mystery Jackpot at Spirit Mountain Casino on Saturday, Oct. 4, and drove home in a 1957 Thunderbird. Curry was playing a 25-cent “5 Times Pay” classic slot machine when her machine seemingly went haywire. She said she thought the machine was broken and didn’t realize that she had just won the mystery jackpot of a cherry red, classic 1957 Thunderbird convertible. “I didn’t know I won the jackpot,” Curry said. “I thought the machine was broken. When the slot attendant came back said I won the jackpot, I was literally shaking.” The mystery jackpot was set to randomly hit at any time, on any pay line, once the odometer reading on the car reached between 4,000 and 20,000 miles. Curry and her husband arrived at Spirit Mountain on Saturday af- ternoon and checked into the lodge. Later that night, they were playing at a Let It Ride table when the topic of the mystery jackpot came up and how close it must be to hitting. After spending her allotted amount at Let It Ride, she took $100 and said she was going to win the car. As she stood outside the casino waiting to receive her new classic car, Curry said quietly, “It’s so beautiful.” After climbing into the driver’s seat, she said, “Oh, yes … this is a good fi t.” The new Mystery Jackpot has already started for a new 2015 Mazda CX5. The jackpot is guaranteed to hit before the odometer reaches 20,000 miles. The car and games are located in The Peak. n Reach your homebuying goals Tribal member Anthony Hudson, a Portland artist and performer, will be staging a “cabaret spectacular” entitled “Carla Rossi Sings the End of the World” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 N.E. Alberta St., Portland. Hudson received a grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council to put on the show, which, he says, “marks a signifi cant moment for my work and reaches further than ever before with what I want to achieve as an LGBT Native artist. Carla Rossi is a project I’ve been working on for four years, and I focused my thesis work around her as a way of talking about my ‘mixed’ identity as a half Native/half white and queer person.” The semi-one-woman cabaret will tell the story of two star-crossed lovers: Weimar Germany and contemporary America. The show will compare the whirling, progressive creativity and freedom of 1920s Berlin with America today via a piano-accompanied songbook of Berlin theater standards and dance support from cabaret girls The Dolly Pops. Rossi will guide the audience through this doomed romance with a winking eye and trademark banter, asking what became of Weimar Berlin and could that happen to us? Tickets, at $15 in advance and $20 at the door, are available through the Alberta Rose Theatre’s box offi ce at albertarosetheatre.com. The show will be presented with American Sign Language interpre- tation and is intended for those 21 and older. n To find out more, attend a FREE Start Your Business class!
