Catherine B. Durschmidt of Grand Ronde, Ore., met Curtis W. Russell Jr. of
Canton, Miss., in Portland while he was on leave. Catherine was work-
ing for Consolidated Freightway. They were married on Aug. 7, 1954,
her grandmother Dollie Leno Pichette Baker’s birthday, at All Saints
Catholic Church in Portland. Their daughter, Tricia, was born the next
year in Astoria while Curtis was on shore duty following a stint as a frog-
man, now known as Navy Seals. During Curtis’ duty in Hawaii, Catherine
worked as a photographer at Honolulu Airport. Curtis worked a year and
a half on swift boats in Vietnam before returning. He started working as
a mechanic foreman for Coos Trucking. Catherine served as chairman of
her local precinct. She attends St. Monica, volunteers for the American
Red Cross, Bay Area Hospital Auxiliary and still enjoys bowling, in which
she has won several
medals in the Oregon
State Games. They are
blessed with three
grandchildren (Liberty,
Curtis and Carrie) and
four great-grandchil-
dren (Chandra, Taylor,
Ryan and Noah). Curtis
and Catherine (“Kitty”)
are so grateful for all
the special memories
shared with their family,
friends and our
Tribal family.
