16 S moke S ignals june 15, 2014 TRIBAL YOUTH PREVENTION CORNER As summer approaches youth will have spare time to be involved in their com- munity. During this time they can also be “bored,” feeling as though there is nothing to do. Here is some information on under- age drinking and the important role you play as the parent/guardian. Talk. They hear you. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administra- tion’s underage drinking prevention campaign helps parents and caregivers start talking to their children early — as early as 9 years old — about the dangers of alcohol. Please start and continue talking with them about the dangers of drinking alcohol at a young age. Parents and caregivers: You are the leading infl uence in your child’s decision not to drink. This website, where the above information came from, has a lot of resources to help guide the conversation with your youth(s): http://beta.samhsa.gov/underage-drinking/parent-resources. A website for youth to visit is the Above the Infl uence campaign. This website is geared toward youth on a variety of topics, including mental health promotion, helping friends, substance abuse facts and resources on how to stay above the infl uence. The website is http:// abovetheinfl uence.com.
