Kathleen George, executive director of Spirit Mountain Community
Fund, was one of 2 Oregon nonprofit women leaders featured in
an exhibit in Salem on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Artist Theresa Weil created
the collection of portraits of female leaders in the hopes of inspiring
young Oregon women about career options that are open to them.
The exhibit, “because She Cares – Portraying 2 Oregon nonProfit
Women Leaders,” debuted at the state Capitol Galleria with Secretary
of State Kate brown delivering the keynote address. George said the
portrait was created from a photograph she submitted to the artist.
”Just painting them would have been the obvious way to approach
this project,” Weil says on the website www.becauseshecares.
org. “but i thought the effort i put into these should be a greater
reflection of the deep dedication of each of these women … so i have
spent many months, meticulously creating each one using only cut
paper. As the project came together, i thought of the interviews i had
done with them, their openness and how hard they work doing what
they love. i didn’t want to take the easy way out in delivering that
message. Hopefully, these portraits will make them proud. These
women work every day, with just one purpose: to make life a little
easier for those who need their help!”
Or 130 bridge work
to begin April 1
PACIFIC CITY - Work will begin April 1 on painting three heavily rusted
bridges over the Nestucca River on OR 130 (Little Nestucca Highway),
between state Highway 22 and U.S. 101. Construction is expected to take
approximately two months per bridge.
The $1.5 million project will require complete closure of the bridges, one
at a time, beginning with the western-most span at milepost 5.11. Local
travelers and residents may access their properties along OR 130, up to
either side of the affected bridge.
Signs will be placed to indicate which bridge is closed and advance
notification and detour signs will be provided to help motorists plan for
added travel time and alternative routes.
The protective paint on the bridges, which were built in the early 1950s,
is oxidizing and cracking, and portions of the steel trusses lack paint
altogether. The repainting will keep the structures from deteriorating to
the point of needing to replace them. The bridges have not been painted
since the 1970s.

(e.g. furnace repairs). Income
eligible households within Polk, Yamhill,
Marion, Washington, Multnomah and Clackamas counties with a
Grand Ronde Tribal member are eligible to apply. CTGR members in
these counties need to contact Grand Ronde to receive assistance
instead of from the community action agency in their area. Grand
Ronde’s program enables more CTGR members to be served than
would otherwise have been possible.
If you are interested in obtaining services contact Social Services at
1-800-242-8196 for energy assistance and the Grand Ronde Tribal
Housing Authority at 503-879-2405 for weatherization. The Tribe’s
LIHEAP program also serves all income eligible Indians on Grand
Ronde Reservation or trust land.
