Scholarships available
The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) annually awards more than $7
million in scholarships to Oregon students through our statewide scholarship
program. Two of these scholarship programs are targeted specifi cally to Na-
tive American students.
VERL AND DOROTHY MILLER NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP
Eligible students include Native American residents of Oregon attending
or planning to attend an accredited trade or vocational school in Oregon. The
awards are for $1,500-$3,000/year - students may apply and compete for the
scholarship for up to four years.
HOWARD VOLLUM AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIP
Eligible students include Native American residents of Clackamas, Mult-
nomah, Washington and Clark counties seeking post-secondary education or
training in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The awards are
for $3,000/year for up to fi ve years of undergraduate study and two years of
graduate study.
Criteria for both scholarships:
* Participation in school or community activities;
* Personal accomplishments or achievements;
* Preference given to students who have a demonstrated commitment to
and involvement in the Native American community;
* Open to students with a certifi cation of Tribal enrollment or decendants
of enrolled members.

Deadline: Scholarship applications are due March 1 for the next academic year.

Movie Night: First Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. Please
note the time change from the previous movie series. This series
of movies features General–PG, family type movies. Youth ages 12
and under must be accompanied by an adult older than 18 years
of age.

• April 3: “Hotel For Dogs”
“Get Fired Up for Reading”: The Reading Incentive Program
started Jan. 15 and ends Feb. 28. The library aligns this program
with the Chinese New Year, which is Jan. 31 through Feb. 14 in
2014. For each book that is read we will add a dragon scale that
states the book title and reader’s name. The more books that are
read, the bigger our dragon will be. In 2013, readers read 211 books.
Let’s try to break that record in 2014! This program is for all ages.
We only have 20 books read so far.
Battle of the Books: Local school districts compete in the Battle
of the Books program each year. All students participating must
be in grades 3-5, 6-8 or 9-12 for the current school year. The Tribal
Library has many of the “Battle” books listed for Oregon available
for check out. Some of the titles for the 3-5 Division are “Birchbark
House” by Louise Erdrich, “Clementine” by Sara Pennypacker
and “Dear Mr. Henshaw” by Beverly Cleary. In the 6-8 Division,
we have “Bigger Than a Bread Box” by Laurel Snyder, “Million
Dollar Throw” by Mike Lupica and “TimeRiders” by Alex Scarrow.
For the 9-12 Division, we have “Grave Mercy” by Robin LaFevers,
“Daughters of Smoke & Bone” by Laini Taylor and “Everybody Sees
the Ants” by A.S. King.
REMINDER: The library no longer accepts: VHS movies; cas-
sette tapes (books/music); and/or paperback books (mass-produced).
Donated items must be clean and in good condition. Thank you.
The Tribal Library is a CCRLS Circulation Site: Use your
Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Services library card to
perform electronic holds on resources in the 18 partner libraries
and items will be couriered here for check out and can be checked
back in here as well.
Inter-Library Loan services: The Tribal Library partners with
Oregon State Library to offer “library to library” inter-library loan
services. By completing the inter-library loan form, library patrons
may request items from the Oregon State Library collection. OSL
lending policies apply for return of items.
The Youth Education Department is offering transportation for this
event. We will departing promptly from the YED building at 7:15 a.m.
and returning around 4:00 p.m.
