The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde's 477 Employment and Training
Program and Land and Culture Department have resources that can be uti
lized along with community members who have a passion for gardening or
want to learn the art of agriculture.

of the planning, preparation and cultivation of the Tribal garden and orchard

you love a place, you end up taking
care of it as best you can."
Adam also purchased his grand
father's house when it was put up
for sale after he walked on. It had
been built by Russ's great-grandfather,
David Leno, and David Leno
Jr., Russ's grandfather, in 1935.
"None of his sons or daughters
could buy it," Adam says. "Rather
than letting the house go, I worked
hard, got a loan and ended up buy
ing the place. The house was almost
lost. I was lucky to be able to save
it. I lived there pretty much my
whole life. Lot of good memories in
the house."
And he is making new ones. He
and his girlfriend, Rachel Clark,
are raising their 4-year-old son,
Nicholas, and 5-month-old daugh
ter, Ashley, in the house he grew
up in.
"Someway, my grandpa Russ still
lives on because of the house and
this job, and it kind of fell in my
lap," he says.
"I plan on working here for a long
time." B

to teach me, and keep me out of
trouble."
Adam did not have to think twice
about taking the position.
"They were trying to find some
body to fill it. They were thinking
about rotating groundskeepers
down here, but when the opportu
nity came up, I jumped on it," he
says.
"It's fulfilling to take care of the
upkeep of our ancestors' graves,
and I'm finding out that a lot of
people are happy with my working
here. They've always seen me with
my grandpa since I was a little kid.
Somehow, it makes them happy
that I'm' working here',1 that Russ's
descendant is working here. They
like the way he kept the place, how
he handled it with respect."
The change has played well among
other members of the Tribe.
"I had one person tell me that
it puts him at ease that Russ's
grandson is up here taking care of
