We wanted to write about the annual .vO- r
...... . . A" A .
Native Wellness Day and Round
Dance. We had a great turnout
from our community youth, as c
well as youth from Chemawa g
Indian School.
Our young men went to pre
pare and participate in the sweat.
This included chopping wood and
transporting it to the sweat site. They
learned about their role in preparing
for the Round Dance ceremony.
The young ladies were at the Community
Center preparing the meal and making giveaway items for the Round
Dance ceremony.
Our youth demonstrated leadership and commitment to learning
and keeping Round Dance traditions. At the plankhouse, we had com
munity members join our youth in listening to our keynote speakers.
The discussion revolved around the importance of upholding culture
by maintaining a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on being alcohol
and drug free.
The day turned into a great weekend of Round Dance. We had a
total of 350 people attend the weekend. There was lots of singing,
dancing and laughs that were shared among family, friends and
community members.
We want to give a BIG THANK YOU to the men and women who
have brought this ceremony to our community. We are so thankful
for the learning experience and being able to share it with the youth
and families of our community.
Coming of Age Ceremony
On March 21, we held a discussion about coming of age ceremo
nies in the Grand Ronde Tribe. We talked about the history of the
ceremonies, knowledge that we had, knowledge we need and barri
ers that we may face in bringing this ceremony back. This was an
initial meeting.
There will be another meeting at noon Thursday, April 1 1. We will
provide lunch. Please call us if you are interested in attending.
