Elders' Holiday Bazaar
2007 - Grand Ronde Tribal member Rebecca Knight was selected
as the 2007-08 Hatfield Fellow by Spirit Mountain Community
Fund. Knight, 22, is the ninth fellow and fifth Grand Ronde Tribal
member to enter the program. She was assigned to the office of
Oregon Congresswoman Darlene Hooley.
2002 - Navajo code talker Roy Hawthorne was the headline
speaker at a fundraiser for the West Valley Veterans Memorial,
helping raise an additional $.'J,000 for the projected $360,000 proj
ect. Hawthorne not only waived his usual $4,000 speaking fee,
but also gave back the $400 honorarium provided by the Cultural
Resources Department to help defray his expenses.
1997 - The Tribe's Health & Wellness Center was operational
with doctors James Malloy and Glenn Gerritz on staff to see Tribal
patients. Molloy left his Sheridan practice to join the center's staff.
"I love it and I'm really enjoying it," he said.
1992 - Tribal receptionist Karen Harrison announced that she
was resigning to return to Albuquerque, N.M., to continue her edu
cation at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. She worked
for the Tribe as receptionist for seven months.
1987 - The Tribe entered into a yearly lease agreement with
the owners of the Maplewood home of the aged. The building was
originally built as a hotel in the early 1920s and the move was
necessary to accommodate growing staff office space needs.
