Smoke Signals
(JGG03
Dear Smoke Signals:
I left Chiloquin to start college at Chemeketa Community College. When
I moved into the Willamette Valley back in 1991, 1 met Jeanne Larsen at
Nanitch Sahalie.
Jeanne welcomed me with a warm heart, open arms and a wonderful
smile. That warm and kind friendship that she gave to me I will cherish
forever.
I am grateful and blessed that Jeanne crossed my path. We are going to
be at a loss for a long while.
It may take a few years or longer. Our hearts will heal slowly.
Jeanne, your love and the memories will live forever in our hearts. My
heart and prayers go out to the family.

Dear Grand Ronde Tribal members:
Each year we hear talk about change for our Tribal government. For
the last few years talk of giving voice back to the Tribal members has
increased greatly. There are many ways we can address giving voice back
to the general membership and a great place to start is by voting.
Last year, there were 3,844 eligible voters; only 1,264 voted. That means
we did not hear the voice of 2,580 of our Tribal members.
I would like to encourage all eligible voters to vote. I know it can be
discouraging at times for many different reasons. Sometimes we may
feel our vote won't matter. Sometimes we may feel disconnected from our
Tribe. Sometimes we may not know the candidates. Sometimes we may
feel as though we don't have time.
Just imagine how 2,580 voices could change the outcome of our elec
tions. Imagine how 2,580 voices could change the direction of our Tribe.
Just imagine how we could affect the success of the Confederated Tribes
of Grand Ronde if all 3,844 eligible members came to the table.
Please let your voice be heard. Register and vote.

Smoke Signals wins first in
Target Audience in contest
WELCHES Grand Ronde's
Tribal newspaper Smoke Signals re
ceived one first-place award and two
second-place awards in the Oregon
Newspaper Publishers Association
Associate Member contest, which
honored work published in 2011.
Award recipients were announced
Friday, July 13, at the annual con
vention held at the Resort at the
Mountain in Welches.
Smoke Signals received a first
place plaque for being the best
newspaper at reaching its Tar
get Audience. Smoke Signals was
judged based on the level of interest,
relevance, creativity and commit
ment to its target audience.
"I couldn't find anything in three
issues that wasn't directly related to
the target audience," the judge said.
"Good, solid reporting."
Second place went to The Capital
Press, a 35,000-circulation weekly
agricultural newspaper published
in Salem.
Tribal photographer Michelle
Alaimo received a second-place cer
tificate for her entry, which featured
photos from the Tribe's participation
in the 201 1 Starlight Parade in Port
land, the 2011 Marcellus Norwest
Memorial Veterans Powwow and
Tribal youth visiting a pumpkin
patch in October.
"Excellent photojournalism!" the
judge said.
Tribal graphic design specialist
George Valdez also won a second
place certificate in graphics.
"Well done graphics," the judge
said.
"The Capital Press is a perennial
winner at ONPA in this category,"
said Publications Coordinator Dean
Rhodes. "For our staff to receive this
first-place recognition is quite an
honor. Everyone at Smoke Signals
works diligently to put out a com
prehensive, quality publication for
the Tribal membership 24 times a
year. To receive a first-place award
from statewide media professionals
recognizing our entire staffs effort is
validation of all the hard work and
dedication that goes into each issue
of Smoke Signals."
Smoke Signals was the only Tribal
newspaper honored in this year's
ONPA Associate Member contest.
Smoke Signals competed against
other mainstream Oregon publica
tions, such as the Sherwood Gazette,
Portland Tribune and aforemen
tioned Capital Press in the Associate
Member category. Judging was per
formed by members of the Arizona
Newspaper Association.
"ONPA only gave out 14 awards
this year in the Associate Member
contest, and for Smoke Signals staff
to win three of them is a testament
to the talented people we have
working for the Tribe," Rhodes
said. "Staff members continue to go
the extra mile to ensure the Tribal
membership receives a publication
that can stand with the best news
papers Tribal and nonTribal in
Oregon."
Smoke Signals also finished
second in the Associate Member
Sweepstakes Award contest, which
assigned three points for a first
place finish, two points for a second-place
award and one point for
third place.
The Capital Press accumulated
10 points while Smoke Signals gar
nered seven. B
