2007 - Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski visited Grand Ronde on May
11 for a day that included a little business and a little culture. He met
with Tribal Council to discuss an expansion of Tribal hunting and
fishing rights and ate pesto salmon at the Community Center while
Tribal pre-schoolers demonstrated their Chinuk Wawa language
skills. After lunch, Kulongoski toured the Tribal campus, including
the Health and Wellness Clinic and Education building.
2002 - The fifth annual Government-to-Government Summit was
held at Spirit Mountain Casino. Smoke Signals said it would be the
"final appearance" of Gov. John Kitzhaber at the annual summit
held between state officials and Oregon's nine federally recognized
Tribes. Little did they know then that Kitzhaber would return to
Oregon politics and be re-elected governor and attend even more
Government-to-Government Summits, which he started by signing
Executive Order 96-30.
1997 - Spirit Mountain Community Fund gave out its first grant
to Life Flight Network. The $174,000 grant will enhance Life Flight's
ability to save lives in medical emergencies in rural Oregon by
funding weather stations and other equipment necessary to imple
ment a satellite navigational system in Tillamook, Siletz Bay and
Grand Ronde.
1992 - Publications does not have a copy of the May issue in
1992.
1987 - Grand Ronde General Manager Jim Willis said the pro
posed Grand Ronde Reservation will result in economic and employ
ment benefits for the West Valley economy. He said the proposed
reservation would generate $1.2 million annually in timber revenues
and create many jobs in the Sheridan, Willamina and Grand Ronde
area.
