Smoke Signals
Mural Project begins Jan. 2
The Grand Ronde Mural Project is scheduled to begin Monday,
Jan. 2, and take about a month to complete.
The mural will be painted on panels at the former middle school
gym in Grand Ronde and then be moved to a permanent site near the
entrance to Tribal Housing. During the first week, an artist team and
student apprentices will set up the work space and draw the 70-foot
mural design. On the second weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Jan.
7-8, Grand Ronde community members will be encouraged to attend
a Saturday open house where anyone can help paint the mural (no
previous art experience is necessary).
The gym will be open to community members throughout the month
of January. People are welcome to stop by and visit, or take advantage
of an open art studio where people can create their own drawings and
paintings under the guidance of professional mural artists.

Tribal member honored
for her Poker Face
Tribal member Shayla Rogers, 28, was honored as Poker Face of the
Month by Woman Poker Player magazine in December.
Rogers, who lives in Portland, started playing poker in August 2010.
"She instantly fell in love with the game. She is a regular at The Players
Club, which is her favorite place to play live local hold 'em," the magazine
wrote. "Although Shayla plays weekly cash game with her friends and
neighbors, she prefers playing tournaments."
Rogers says she dreams of being a professional poker player and has been
working toward achieving that goal by studying the game and watching
other players.
Rogers is a former ballet dancer with a very competitive personality.
"When she has her mind set on something, she will not quit until she
accomplishes what she intends to," the magazine wrote. "She is very de
termined to be the best at everything she does." B
