Exhibit opens
Tribal Elder Duane Whaalar pauses on his
way through tha "Grand Ronda's Canoa
Journey" exhibit to watch a video that Is
part of it during an opening reception for
the exhibition at the Willamette Heritage
Center at the Mill in Salem on Thursday,
April 7. The exhibition was curated by the
Tribe's Cultural Resources Department
and brings to life the cultural Importance
and heritage of the historic shovelnose
canoes used by the Native peoples to
travel throughout the Willamette Valley. It
will run through May 30.

The Grand. Ronde Canoe family sings and drums at the opening reception for the
"Grand Rondo's Canoe Journey" exhibit at the Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill in
Salem on Thursday, April 7.
This undated shovelnose canoe in the "Grand Ronde's
Canoe Journey" exhibit has been owned by the
Willamette Heritage Center since it was donated In 1980.
The donor said it was "found whan the riverbank washed
away in a flood on the Santiam River near Tangent." It
was announced at the opening reception that the center
is repatriating the priceless canoe to the Tribe.

Jim Holmes, Tribal member and employee health care specialist for the
Tribe, transports a cotton ball stuck to his nose with Vaseline from one
bowl to another while playing the nose dive game at Spirit Mountain
Community Fund's "Minute to Win It" booth during Fun at Work Day
in the Tribal gymnasium on Tuesday, April 5. Holmes had one minute
to transfer five cotton balls. The annual event, put on by the Tribal
Recognition Committee, rewards Tribal employees for their dedicated
service to the Tribal membership.
Recycle Center moved
The Recycle Center has been moved temporarily to 9675 Grand Ronde
Road. For more information, contact Tribal Facilities Manager Michael J.
