Elders' garage sale seeking donations
Tribal Elders are regularly seeking donations of items for their fund
raising garage sales.

2006 The Tribe participated in a ceremony at the McCormick and
Baxter Superfund site in Portland Harbor to commemorate the planting
of more than 10,000 native trees and shrubs. Tribal Chairwoman Cheryle
A. Kennedy told those in attendance that the Grand Ronde Tribe was
"astonished to what degree contamination affected the lands and peoples
that lived here." The site was the former home of a creosote company
that operated from the 1940s until 1991.
2001 - Smoke Signals debuted online thanks to Tribal member Willie
Mercier of the Tribe's Office of Information Systems. The possibilities
with technology are endless from here on out," Mercier said. "Look for
new changes to the homepage all the time."
1996 Preschoolers from Grand Ronde were on The Ramblin' Rod
Cartoon Show," which aired out of Portland on Feb. 17. Meanwhile,
Tribal member Lon Mercier received national recognition as the artist
responsible for the graphite drawing from which Rip Caswell sculpted
the bronze statue of Martha Jane Sands and Gertrude Mercier at Spirit
Mountain Casino.
1991 Tribal member Shonn Leno defeated Ryan Henry 2-0 in the
State 2A Wrestling Championship at Western Oregon College in Mon
mouth. Leno was a sophomore at Willamina High School and won the
106-pound title.
1986 Ed Larsen at Spirit Mountain Store at Agency started selling
jackets, hats and T-shirts adorned with the Grand Ronde Tribal logo. The
store was at the intersection of state Highway 22 and Agency Creek Road.
Tribal Council thanked Larsen for his cooperation in selling the items.
