Smoke Signals
2006 The statue of Martha Jane Sands was moved from the
main casino entrance to the Legends' lobby. Tribal members Bobby
Mercier, Mike Cook and Ryan Korn and Tribal Council member
Jack Giffen Jr. helped to successfully relocate the statue. It was
moved due to the high number of customers who congest the front
lobby daily.
2001 Former Dallas Cowboy Ed Too Tall" Jones spent Super
Bowl Sunday signing autographs at Spirit Mountain Casino as the
Baltimore Ravens played the N.Y. Giants. The Ravens won.
1996 Tribal Council established a burial fund to cover expenses
at the time of loss of a loved one. The burial fund at the time paid
up to $3,000 directly to the funeral establishment, reported Enroll
ment Director Margo Mercier.
1991 After spending six years working for Cooper Consulting
Inc. in Portland, Tribal member John Mercier returned home. In
November 1990, he was hired by the Tribe as the Tribal Planner.
1986 The Tribe was in the process of negotiating contracts
with Indian Health Service for the fiscal year. Between the Com
munity Health Nurse Program and Contract Health portion of
Indian Health Service, the Tribe was expecting almost $500,000
in funding.

WORKER'S COMPENSATION ORDINANCE
OPEN FOR COMMENT .
The Tribal Council has adopted a Worker's Compensation Ordi
nance, under the emergency adoption procedures of the Govern
ment and Procedures Ordinance. The Ordinance became effective
on January 1, 2011. The purpose of the Ordinance is to authorize
a system under Tribal law for providing certain wage replacement,
impairment, medical and other benefits to covered workers who have
been injured or suffered an occupational disease arising out of and
during the course and scope of their employment with the Tribe or a
Tribal corporation. Among other things the Ordinance:
Provides that Tribal, not State, law governs the rights of injured
workers of the Tribe and any Tribal corporation;
Provides the exclusive remedy for covered employees injured in the
course and scope of their employment with the Tribe or a Tribal
Corporation;
Provides that on-the-job injuries be reported within 48 hours of the
incident.

invites comment on the newly adopted Ordinance. Please send your

Building on Wednesday, Feb. 2. In addition to reading from the book,
which was handed out at the event and children were able to keep, the
night included art activities and dinner. Both Madison and Sarah Ross
are Tribal members.
Spring sweat scheduled
A Spring Equinox Sweat will be held at noon Sunday, March 20, at the
Willamina home of Kathy and Don Provost.
The Provosts also continue to seek sweat lodge cover donations.

Elders' Card Party seeks players
The Elder's Card Party is seeking Tribal Elders interested in play
ing pinochle. Games will be played from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March
