Smoke Signals 13 NOVEMBER 1, 2010 Edward William "Bill" G iff en Sept. 1, 1930 - Oct. 22, 2010 Edward William "Bill" Giflen, 80, a resident of Sheridan died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010. He was born Sept. 1, 1930, in Englemine, Calif., the son of Llewellyn D. and Marie I. Jerro Giffen. He lived in Cali fornia until moving to Bandon in the early 1930s. Bill married Diane Agnes Linton on May 31, 1951, in Grand Ronde. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951, trained at Camp Roberts in California and was stationed in Okinawa, where he was part of the military police. He returned to live in Klamath Falls, where he attended the Oregon Technical Institute, receiving training in commercial and domestic refrigeration. For 46 years, Bill and Diane made their home in Waldport, where they owned and operated Giffen Refrig eration and Appliance and Western Auto Store. He was a very active member of the community as part of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, a member of the Yachats Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a director for the Pioneer Telephone Co-Operative for 16 years. Bill was a member of the Catholic Church. In 2002, Sheridan became their home. He was an avid out doorsman, enjoying camping, hunting and fishing. He loved little children and animals, as well as pulling a good joke on someone. He is survived by his wife, Tribal Elder Diane Giffen of Sheri dan; daughter, Debbie Marrington of SheridanBrookings; grand son Sean O'Leary and great-grandson Nathaniel Borgen; sisters, lone Moore of Dallas and Virginia Thoreson of Roseville, Calif.; stepsister, Carol Fulkerson of South San Francisco, Calif.; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Giffen Sr. Viewing was held Tuesday, Oct. 26, with a recitation of the rosary at Dallas Mortuary Center. A funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Grand Ronde Tribal gymnasium. Interment followed in the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery. The Tribe will test for a variety of diseases primary among these are the following: Chronic Wasting Disease has not been detected in Oregon. We want to catch this disease early if it shows up in Oregon as it can have devastating effects on deer and elk populations. Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease has been detected throughout Oregon. Samples will help determine where adenovirus is found in Oregon. How to participate: Allow the Tribes' biologists to collect samples of brain stems, lymph nodes and tooth samples from elk and samples of blood, brain stems, lymph nodes, muscle tissue and tooth samples from deer. All samples must be collected within 48 hours of death, 24 hours pre ferred. Bring hunter-harvested animals to the Tribes' Natural Resources office at 47010 S.W. Hebo Road, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m. After hours or on the weekend call 503-560-4426. If you are unable to bring an animal in we may be able to come to you to col lect samples. Please contact the Tribes' biologists for more information. Hunters will need to provide the general location (within a mile) of where the animal was killed (to be used in the event that a disease is found). Your name will be entered in the drawing for each useable sample we are able to collect, up to three entries for each deer and up to two for each elk. Fresh road-kills can be reported to the Tribes' biologists so we can pick them up for sampling. Your name would then be entered for any useable samples we collect from the road kill. Tribal and nonTribal community members are eligible to participate. Animals must be harvested legally. Drawing will be held at the April 2011 Fish and Wildlife Committee meeting at the Natural Resources office. Approximately 13,965 children in the state of Oregon have been in foster care at least once during the past year. Currently, there are approximately 87 Grand Ronde children in foster care. Half of those children are wards of the Tribal Court right here in the Grand Ronde Community. The Grand Ronde Tribal Court is looking for committed, caring volunteers who want to help these children by advocating for the child. The Tribal Court CASA Program will train all volunteer advocates. Give these children a voice during this difficult time, help these children to receive the services they need, stay connected to their culture and find safe permanent homes.
