Veterans' Powwow sot for July 9-1 1

The annual Grand Rondo Veterans Powwow will be held Friday through
Sunday, July 0-11, at Uyxat Powwow Grounds near Fort Yamhill Stat
Park off state Highway 22.
Grand entries are set for 7 p.m. Friday, 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and I
p.m. Sunday.
Gourd dancing will occur at 1 1 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
All veterans, dancers and members of the public are invited to attend,
as are arts and crafts and food vendors.
Last year's event attracted about 2,000 people daily, said Veterans'
Powwow organizer Chris Tinney (Lower Eastern Cherokee), who alo is
general manager of Grand Ronde Station.
Friday night's session will be a social powwow, Tinney said, with inter
Tribal dances, games and any giveaways attendees want to schedule.
During the Saturday afternoon session, there will be a giveaway of Grand
Ronde Veterans' Powwow baseball caps and certificates of appreciation
for veterans in attendance.
Other special events include Tribal member Deitrich Peters and his
wife, Rose, sponsoring men's and women's team dance specials during the
Saturday evening session.
Saturday's 5 p.m. dinner, from the Mjk Mjk House in Grand Ronde
Station, will be ceremonial elk spaghetti with garlic toast and will be
served on-site.
Sunday morning's 8 a.m. breakfast will be biscuits and gravy with
scrambled eggs. It, too, will be served at the powwow grounds.
Vendor booth spaces cost $50 for Grand Ronde Tribal members, $60 for
non-food vendors and $75 for food vendors. Spaces are 10-by-20 feet, and
vendors needing a larger area can purchase an additional space.

There is free parking and camping available at Uyxat Powwow Grounds,
but organizers remind people that no drugs or alcohol are permitted, and
pets are not allowed in the powwow arena.

TRIBAL PREFERENCE ORDINANCE
The Tribal Council, in consultation with the Tribal Attorney's Of
fice, is considering adoption of a Tribal Preference Ordinance. The
proposed Ordinance was given a First Reading at the May 19, 2010,
Tribal Council meeting.
The purpose of the Ordinance is to promote employment of Tribal
members by requiring employers doing business with the Tribe or on
the Tribe's Reservation to grant preference in all hiring, promotions
and other employment and contracting opportunities to qualified Tribal
members, their descendants, Indians and qualified Indian-owned enti
ties. Among other things, the Ordinance requires covered employers to:
(1) Give hiring preference to qualified, applicants in the following
order:
(a) Grand Ronde members,
(b) Grand Ronde spouses and the legal guardian(s) or natural or
adoptive parent(s) of a Grand Ronde child,
(c) Direct descendants,
(d) Adopted descendants,
(e) Other Indians;
(2) Advertise job vacancies; .
(3) Give preference in the awarding of contracts and subcontracts to
Indian-owned businesses who are responsible bidders; and
(4) Provides that employers who violate the Ordinance may be sanc
tioned. For a copy of the Tribal Preference Ordinance please contact the

The Tribal Executive Team will be sponsoring a Tribal Council
Candidate Forum from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, in the
Tribal gymnasium.
