2004 Portland area Tribal members obtained closer access to
Tribal employment programs, education opportunities and cultural
activities with the Sept. 17 opening of the Tribe's Portland satellite
office. More than 600 Tribal members live in the Portland metro
area.
1999 Robert Martin, who had worked for the Wampanoag Tribe
in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and the Ponca Tribe in Nebraska, was
hired as the Tribe's new executive officer. He was descended from
the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes.
1994 Construction started on the Grand Ronde Tribe's gaming
center. "We should see real activity starting in mid-October," Bruce
Thomas, director of Spirit Mountain Development Corp., said. The
$21 million facility was scheduled for a grand opening in August
1995.
1989 Publications and Tribal archives do not have a copy of the
October 1989 Smoke Signals.
1984 The Tribe held its first Restoration Celebration on Oct.
6. More than 1,000 people attended the event and U.S. Rep. Les
AuCoin, who submitted the Tribe's Restoration Bill in Congress,
was the event's keynote speaker.

NAMMYs to be broadcast
live on the Internet
Grand Ronde Tribal members who want to watch the 1 1th annual Native
American Music Awards live now have an option go to the Internet.
Starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, the live broadcast can be seen by
visiting either www.nativeamericanmusicawards.com or going to the
Web site www.8inglefeathermedia.com.
Grand Ronde Tribal member Jan Michael Looking Wolf Reibach is
up for four awards at this year's ceremony, including Artist of the Year,
Record of the Year and Best Instrumental Recording for "The Looking
Wolf Project."
Reibach, the Tribe's Lands Manager, also is nominated for Best Music
Video for his appearance in the family movie "The Legend of Tillamook's
Gold," in which he appears with the late Floyd Red Crow Westerman
("Dancing With Wolves") and plays flute.
Single Feather Media, a Native American-owned multimedia company,
will provide the Internet broadcast.
Hosted by Gil Birmingham of "Twilight," the three-hour Native Ameri
can Music Awards program at the Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls, N.Y.,
will feature more than 15 live musical performances and 30 awards
categories from every musical genre.
Grand Ronde Tribal Council member Steve Bobb Sr. will attend and
present an award. Bobb paid for his own trip to the event.

Walking Challenge. Donnette Spaulding, a dental assistant for the
Tribe, walked 732 miles, the most miles of all participants. The winner
in the team competition was the Dental Divas, consisting of dental
assistants Shanna Eide, Genif er Grout and Spaulding, which had a total
of 1 ,569 miles. A lunch was held in Room 204 in the Governance Center
on Wednesday, Sept. 1 6, for the walkers.
