Grounds just after 3 p.m. Monday, July 27. "We don't normally get a lot of fires in this area," said Tribal member Michael Wilson, Natural Resources
manager for the Tribe. "Despite that, our crews and engines were ready to roll and the arrived on scene in short order. Our fire crews serve as a national
fire resource and have fire experience throughout the western states. I have always said that this is valuable experience, and someday the Tribe will
benefit from it. Today was one of those payoff days." With the help of landowner Jim Werth, who put a plow on his tractor and dug a perimeter around
the fire, crews from the Tribe, West Valley Fire District and the state Department of Forestry fought flames as high as 1 2 feet. "It was making a good run,"
said Tribal firefighter Chuck Chapin, among 1 1 Tribal firefighters on the scene. The crews contained the fire in less than an hour. The hay had recently
been harvested so there was little if any economic loss, but the straw left behind was kindling dry in the 1 00-plus degree heat and the fire threatened a
nearby woodland. "We're lucky it didn't spread to the forest," said Wilson, who called in the Tribal engines as he drove by the scene on Hebo Road.
