Coleman helps team
make state tournament
Tribal member Rachelle Coleman, 13, was instrumental in helping the
Cascade junior softball team make the state tournament for the third year
in a row.
On July 18, the Cascade team won 14-6 over the Sprague-South Salem-West
Salem All-Stars to win the District 7 championship.
Trailing 3-2 with a runner on third in the bottom of the second inning, Cole
man, who is the team's pitcher, hit a home run over the left-field fence to put
Cascade ahead. Cascade added two more runs after Coleman's homer to go up
6-3. In the bottom of the third, they scored five more runs to lead 11-4.
Coleman extinguished a threat in the fifth after loading the bases with one
out. She struck out the next batter and then fielded a slow dribbler up the
middle to end the inning.
After the fifth inning, Coleman faced seven hitters for the rest of the game,
winning the game. Cascade advanced to the state tournament, hosted by
Southeast Portland. Coach Dave Morton said he was hoping to improve on
last year's third-place finish.

Cultural Resources seeks
plankhouse giveaway items
In anticipation of an early fall opening of the Grand Ronde plankhouse,
the Tribe's Cultural Resources Department is seeking donations of giveaway
items for the planned blessing ceremony.
Giveaway items can be about almost anything, including beads and blankets,
but not alcohol or drugs.
The items are intended to recognize people from outside the Grand Ronde
community who will come for the blessing ceremony.
"By having people from outside the community, they are helping to
strengthen our house," said Tribal member and Cultural Resources Protection
Coordinator Eirik Thorsgard.
Giveaway items can be dropped off at the Cultural Resources Department
in Grand Ronde or at the Tribal satellite offices in Eugene and Portland.
For more information or to check on the appropriateness of possible give
away items, call Thorsgard at 503-879-1630 or Language & Culture Specialist
Bobby Mercier at 503-879-2076.

The big event this month was Elder Honor Day at Spirit Mountain
Casino.
It has been the tradition of most Tribes in the Northwest to host an
Elder Honor Day and invite other Tribes for food, games, giveaways
and fun.
A lot of the travel that Grand Ronde Elders do as a group is to visit
other Tribes during their honor days. This year we hosted more than
400 Tribal Elders from Oregon, Washington and Idaho Tribes, as well
as individual Tribal Elders from all over.
This year's master of ceremonies was Bob Tom and Wesley "Buddy"
West was the bingo caller.
The Elder Committee would like to thank all those who helped make
this year a success, from those who were involved, from the casino
staff to the Elders who donated gifts, time and hard work.
The Elder meals program will be closed this year for the weeks of
Aug. 10 and Aug. 17, and the Elders' Activity Center will be closed for
the week of Aug. 17.
We also would like to thank those who donated items for the Elder
Yard Sale on July 17-18.

Grand Ronde Library Addition Project
Tribal Council met and reviewed suggestions received from
community meetings and from surveys and directed staff to
prepare an ICDBG application for the construction of a Grand
Ronde Library Addition. The current library room in the Adult
Education Building does not have enough space to hold the
Tribe's library collections or to effectively offer community pro
grams for children, youth, families, adults and the elderly. The
2,350 sq. ft. proposed project will double the size of the current
library space. The estimated cost is $667,000 including $500,000
requested from the proposed Indian Community Development
Block Grant and $167,000 from the Tribe. An additional $25,000
a year in operating costs is anticipated. To comment on the
proposed application please contact Kim Rogers, Planning &
Grants Development Manager, at 503-879-2250 or send your
comments to the Planning & Grants Development Department
at 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, OR 97347. Written
comments should be provided by Aug. 4, 2009. Council will also
collect comments at their Aug. 5, 2009, Tribal Council meeting
at which Council will consider formally authorizing this applica
tion. The ICDBG grant application is due on Aug. 7, 2009.
