2004 Former President Ronald Reagan, who signed both the Grand
Ronde Restoration Act in 1983 and the Tribe's Reservation Act in 1988,
died on June 5 at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., at the age of 93.
1999 - A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Elder housing com
plex was held June 10. Tribal Elder Ila Dowd gave the opening prayer.
The new complex will have 38 separate two-bedroom apartments off
Grand Ronde Road for Tribal Elders to live in.
1994 - The Grand Ronde softball team, nicknamed The Coastal Rap
pers, took first place at the co-ed tournament sponsored by Chemawa
Indian School. Team members were Deanna Glass, Greg Leno, CeCe
Kneeland, Jim Holmes and Steve Diaz, and Siletz Tribal members
Wozzie Case and Fonda Jackson.
1989 - Tribal enrollment had reached 2,457, according to Enrollment
Director Margo George-Mercier.
1984 Tribal Council members Russ Leno, Mark Mercier and
Frank Harrison toured three other Indian reservations to compare
Tribal constitutions and bylaws, and get a general idea of how other
reservations operate.

The Behavioral Health Department is starting a Men's Group, which will
be open to members of all Tribes. Topics that will be covered include healthy
relationships, communication skills, anger management, spirituality, emotional
intelligence and how to live one's life from a place integrity and authenticity.
The Men's Group will meet every Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the
Behavioral Health Department at Health & Wellness. A certificate of comple
tion will be awarded to men who have completed the training. Transportation
may be available for those in need.

Effective June 1, burial benefits for nonTribal members will decrease.
Currently, the benefit available to all enrolled Tribal members and their
immediate family members is $5,500 to be paid directly to a funeral es
tablishment of choice. There is also a $300 reception benefit that is paid
directly to a family member.
Regretfully, due to budgetary reasons, and with the best interest of the
Tribe in mind, Tribal Council made a difficult decision to reduce the burial
benefit for nonTribal members. This benefit will continue as is for Tribal
members, but will decrease to $2,500 for nonTribal members not including
the $300 reception benefit.
Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery plots are still available at no cost to Tribal
members, their spouses and children. D
Cultural Resources schedules classes
The Cultural Resources Department has scheduled classes
in the Grand Ronde, Eugene and Portland offices during the
upcoming months. Classes include:
Parfleche: During the one-day class, students will make a
parfleche bag out of rawhide and then paint it with natural pig
ments. Classes are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July
16 and 17, in Grand Ronde in Education Room 207, 11 a.m. to
5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Portland satellite office, 3312
S.W. Kelly Ave., and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in the
Eugene satellite office, 711 Country Club Road, Suite 1A. All
materials will be provided. A limit of 10 students per class.
Intermediate Twining Basketry: Tribal Elder Sam Henny
will be teaching an intermediate-level basketry class from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 11, in Grand Ronde in Education
Room 207 and Saturday, July 18, in the Eugene satellite office.
Attendees should bring a sack lunch and good scissors. A limit
of 15 students per class.
Wing Dress: A wing dress class will be held in all three of
fices from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, July 19 and 26, in Grand
Ronde, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27, at
the Portland satellite office and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, Aug.
2 and 9, at the Eugene satellite office. Students need to contact ,
Misty Thorsgard for a supply List.
Eugene Wetlands: The West Eugene Wetlands are within
the homelands of the Kalapuya people and provide opportunities
to learn about key traditional food resources, such as camas,
other bulbs and onions, tarweed, hazelnuts, acorns, tulle and
cattail. Classes will be held Thursdays, June 25, July 23, Aug.
13 and Sept. 24. Contact Greg Archuleta at 503-663-0927 or

Gathering: Archuleta also will be providing several gather
ing opportunities at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, in Eugene for
