10 Smoke Signals MARCH 15, 2009 Tribe accepting Hatfield Fellowship applications The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is accepting applications for the Mark O. Hatfield Congressional Fellowship. Every year, a Hatfield fellow serves as an intern for a member of Oregon's congressional delegation. The fellow is selected from adult Native American ap plicants who are enrolled members of a federally recognized Tribe in Oregon. If there are no qualified applicants from Oregon, enrolled members of federal ly recognized Tribes in Washington, Idaho and Montana will be considered. The selected Hatfield fellow will intern in Washington, D.C., for nine months and receive a monthly stipend, relocation and travel expenses, and tuition for the American Political Science Association orientation. New for 2009, fellow ship applications must be completed and submitted via the Internet. Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday, April 24. It's time for the AMERIND Risk Management Corporation 2009 Na tional Fire and Home Safety Poster Contest for children currently in grades K through 8 (only one entry per child). All posters entered are to illustrate a fire safety theme, and must be originals created by the child in crayon, markers or paint, drawn hori zontally on 8.5" x 11" paper (no pencils, please). This year's winner of the poster contest will receive a $2,000 savings bond in his or her name. OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMENT ON GRTHA'S ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REPORT The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority (GRTHA) receives grants under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996, as amended. HUD provides these grants to Indian Tribes and Indian Housing Authorities for the development and operation of low-income housing in Indian areas. To be eligible for the grants, the Housing Author ity must submit an annual Indian Housing Plan that meets the minimum requirements of the Act, and submit regular performance reports to HUD. Cultural Resources seeks plankhouse giveaway items In anticipation of an early fall opening of the Grand Ronde plankhouse, the Tribe's Cultural Resources Department is seeking donations of giveaway items for the planned blessing ceremony. Giveaway items can be about almost anything, including beads and blankets, but not alcohol or drugs. The items are intended to recognize people from outside the Grand Ronde community who will come for the blessing ceremony. "By having people from outside the community, they are helping to strengthen our house," said Tribal member and Cultural Resources Protection Coordinator Eirik Thorsgard. Giveaway items can be dropped off at the Cultural Resources Department in Grand Ronde or nt the Tribal satellite offices in Eugene and Portland.
