Elder assists Yaqui
runners with ancestral run
Tribal Elder Connie Lopez began the
Yaqui Ancestral Run with other Yaqui
runners on Sept. 2 from Guadalupe, Ariz.,
to Sonora, Mexico.
The runners took turns carrying cer
emonial staffs and churches along the
route graciously received the runners and
a plaque was left at each church.
The runners ran 496 miles and followed
the trade route used by Pascua Yaqui
ancestors.
The run continued into Nogales where
Yaquis from Sonora met the Arizona Ya
qui runners. Each day the runners ran
approximately eight times with each running for two minutes
carrying the ceremonial staffs. The runners camped or stayed in
hotels at the end of each day. The run ended Sept. 9.
Lopez, 58, said she received a lot of respect and congratulations
for participating in the event. She was asked to speak to crowds
at the event during Yaqui recognition festivities at the end of
September and at running races.
She said she felt the drivers and the many people who assisted in
cooking for the runners were awesome and deserved equal credit.
