General Council meeting Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center Dear Tribal members: A very heartfelt thank you to our Tribal Council for the beautiful Pendleton blankets given to McMinnville Police officers Sgt. Scott Fessler and Michael LaRue. These blankets are now proudly displayed in each department. They are held in high esteem and cherished above their medals of valor. The officers now consider me as a new member of their family, and I, too, feel the same. Research of the artwork on the Pendleton blanket gave these two officers a new understanding of the colors behind the blanket itself: purple establishing royalty and gold honor. Placing the blanket upon their shoulders made them a part of my family forever. Both McMinnville police officers have advocated for me to be a part of their team, a volunteer with the McMinnville Police Department. I met with Police Chief Ron Noble on Wednesday, Aug. 27. He said he would consider it an honor to have me on their team. Veronica Gaston Roll 2332 Dear Smoke Signals: Where has my Tribe gone? Where are my people that used to be united as one? Are they lost? I stand proud of my heritage and of my bloodline, but I can no longer stand idly by as I watch out of the corner of my eye seeing people being pitted against others, rumors being spread about another, or those who promote themselves and talk about a family's past while at a gathering for a lost loved one. Recently at a gathering to remember a lost loved one, it appeared that people were not there for the person or the family, but to talk about their own agenda or to talk about another's past. I hold my head high and am proud to say that I belong to this Tribe, but as a person I see things. I believe we have lost sight of what unity is. I don't see us as a whole. I see people with titles thinking they are better than others, people with holier than thou attitudes, people that no longer care of what unity really is, only their personal well-being. As a child I remember coming here and people were happy and cared for others. There were no harsh or outlandish rumors going around and groups of people weren't pitted against each other like today, and those who have titles acted like they were just one of us, just another Tribal member. People that read this may not see how I see, but this is my opinion and it's unfortunate that I don't see my Tribe as a whole. It's too bad because we all know that a house divided will fall.
