Dear Smoke Signals:
Wow, we really must be a "family" of sorts with all the bickering I hear
from way out here in Corning, N.Y. During election time especially, it
sounds like a bunch of grade school children arguing over a favorite toy.
I have two favorite sayings which I feel apply in this situation, "You can
choose your friends but ultimately God chooses your family" and "You can
please some of the people some of the time and all of the people none of the
time." I try very hard to pay attention to what the candidates are saying in
Smoke Signals and the letters they take the time to send me. It does not
bother me that they send me letters; being in New York, it's frustrating
to not be there and experience firsthand what is going on there and be a
part of it all. I will say, however, when I see letters from a group of people
or an "alliance" of people, I tend to read them, but toss them and not vote
for those people. This is not "Survivor" or a popularity contest to me, but
the future of our Tribe.
I am so proud of some of the things the Tribe has accomplished. Some of
the ones I remember off the top of my head over the years are purchases
of ambulances for the community; support for the arts; building of homes
on the reservation for the elderly; and support of other Native American
organizations and functions. What a blessing to have health care and
dental care, which the Tribe oversees and takes care of for us. Thank you
so much for that!
I really enjoying reading Smoke Signals as there is so much informa
tion that is helpful and makes me feel in a small part an actual member
of the Tribe.
For this election, when all is said and done and people are elected, I am
hoping and praying that everyone will understand that a different point
of view is not necessarily someone who is against them, but rather an op
portunity to look at things in a new light. Things can be worked through
and decided on, and the word "compromise" can be a good option. It seems
to me, after all, that most of us are related in one way or another; whether
first cousins or sixth cousins. So please try to embrace differences, respect
each other, agree to disagree in an agreeable way, and count the blessings
of our Tribe and its Restoration. I'm hoping the things I read in Smoke
Signals will sound more diplomatic like the Elders of old, and less like the
petty arguments of our children.
