Dear Tribal Members:
We all know that this past Democratic primary season has been conten
tious. The workings of the Democratic National Party appear to be less than
fair. However, decisions were made by those in power that disenfranchised
voters. What's done is done and cannot be undone, but now is the time for
us to come together.
If there is to be any hope for this country it must come from a common
belief that we can do better for our children than we have done so far. Over
the last seven years we have added $4 trillion in debt to our children and
grandchildren's future. It took over 200 years to run up $5 trillion and in
just seven years we have allowed that to double to nearly $10 trillion.
The commitment of not voting is, to me, a way to avoid our responsibility in
this matter. We have two choices and only two. We either vote for a change
in our national policy or we continue shoveling the debt of the present upon
the backs of our children.
We are spending $12 billion a month in Iraq. That is money that should
be used by the government to meet the needs of all of its citizens; not just
the politically connected. There are treaty obligations that are being ignored,
while the health of our Tribe is being underfunded. We need a change in
direction and emphasis.
There are many untruths that are being propagated. One of the biggest is
that Barack Obama is an elitist. He, in truth, was raised by a single parent
(his mother) and his grandparents (Thank God for Elders). He grew up on
the south side of Chicago and through his hard work attended and gradu
ated from Harvard. He was not born of privilege. We must move beyond the
Republican lies and smears to realize that Mr. Obama is more than what the
Fox noise machine is making of him. ' ' '

Dear Smoke Signals:
Hi. My name is Sara Griffin. I am 6 years old and a Tribal
member. ,
This Memorial Day weekend, I was a state finalist in the
National American Miss Pageant in Portland. At the pag
,eant, I won two trophies; one for being a finalist and one
for third runner-up in most photogenic. Also, I was asked
to go to nationals in Anaheim in November. Mostly,
though, I just had fun.
I wanted to thank the Confederated Tribes of
Grand Ronde for its sponsorship. I could not have
gone without it. And many thanks to all the people
who supported me, especially Grandma Chris, Grandma
and Grandpa Linton, Uncle Les, Aunt Kathy and Tony, Mom and Dad, Auntie
Sheila and all my family.
Thanks to all who supported me.
