Two candidates who survived the May
20 primary visited the Confederated
Tribes of Grand Ronde in the months
leading up to the election. State Sen.
Kurt Schrader (below) of Canby visited
the Tribe on April 1 6 and met with Tribal
Council. Schrader won the Democratic
primary and will run in November
against Lake Oswego businessman Mike
Erickson for Oregon's 5th District seat
in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Incumbent Darlene Hooley is retiring.
And 42-year-old Lewis and Clark
College law professor John Kroger (above, right) will become the
next Oregon Attorney General after defeating Greg Macpherson in
the Democratic primary. (There is no Republican opponent in the
November general election.) Kroger visited the Tribe in February and
had an instant rapport with several Tribal Council members when he
revealed that he had served in the Marine Corps.

Tribal Elder Wesley "Buddy" West's bid to be
come the first enrolled member of an Oregon Tribe
to serve in the state Legislature came to an end
during the May 20 Democratic primary.
West, 65, of Sheridan, faced Jason Brown in the
Democratic primary. West received 1,605 votes, or
25 percent, to Brown's 4,705 votes.
The 23rd District represents parts of Benton,
Linn, Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties, includ
ing all of Willamina and Sheridan, but not Grand
Ronde, which is in District 10.
West, who served on the Grand Ronde Tribal
Council from 2004 to 2007, announced his candi
dacy at the February General Council meeting held in Clackamas.
West ran on a platform of tackling the issues of crime, meth and drug addic
tion and poverty in District 23, as well as establishing and keeping an open
line of communication with district residents.
Brown will face Republican Jim Thompson in the November General Elec
tion for the District 23 seat.
