Smoke Signals 13 MARCH 15, 2008 Spring break camping trip slated The fifth annual Spring Break Camping Trip between March 24-27 will head to Camp Westwind, six miles north of Lincoln City. The 500-acre site will host a week of hikes, games, paddling, skits and a treasure hunt. The trip is open to Tribal members, descendants and Native students in sixth through 12th grades. Blessing set for Elders' Community Center set A blessing will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, for the new Elders' Community Center currently under construction on Black tail Drive. Tribal drummers will participate at 11 a.m. as part of the 8,000 Drum worldwide Native drumming ceremony and a luncheon will follow at noon in the Community Center. The 8,000 Drum ceremony will be a worldwide prayer for the heal ing of Mother Earth and as many Indians as possible will drum in hopes of fulfilling an Otomi prophecy at the same time. Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMENT ON GRTHA'S ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REPORT UNDER THE HUD INDIAN HOUSING PLAN The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority (GRTHA) has re ceived grants under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996, as amended. HUD provides grants to Indian Tribes and Indian Housing Authorities for the develop ment and operation of low-income housing in Indian areas. To be eligible for the grants, the Housing Authority must submit an an nual Indian Housing Plan that meets the minimum requirements of the Act, and submit regular performance reports to HUD. Tribal members are hereby notified that the Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority has prepared the 2007 Annual Performance Report (APR), and comments on the report are welcome. All com ments will be incorporated into the final report. Copies of the report are available by calling GRTHA at 503-879-2401, or at 800-422-0232, ext. 2401. Copies of the APR can also be picked up at the GRTHA office in Grand Ronde. Comments must be submitted in writing to GRTHA no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 25. NWIHA SCHOLARSHP FOR TRIBAL YOUTH The Northwest Indian Housing Association (NWIHA) annually provides scholarships to Tribal youth, defined as Tribal members ages 24 years old or younger. The intent is to provide financial awards to youth for education and training programs at schools, colleges, job training organiza tions, or other worthwhile organizations. Traditionally, individual awards have not exceeded $1,000. Applications are available by contacting the Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority at 503-879-2401 or 1-800-422-0232, ext. 2401.
