Dear Smoke Signals:
My son, Daniel Freeman, sent me
this beautiful portrait of his daugh
ter (at right), Amanda, drawn by a
friend in prison. Danny is serving
seven years in prison as a result of
a plea deal.
The maximum hit-and-run charge
is five years. He pleaded guilty,
signed the deal and, after 25 minutes
in court, they hauled him away.
The deal said he could have time to
settle his affairs. That didn't happen. He left three teenagers at home that
day. Well, the two boys. Amanda was with me in court. She was ordered out
of court. She left hysterical and totally shocked. Amanda was devastated
over losing her Dad. She's had ulcerative colitis since she was 10. Even
Amanda can't remember how many operations she's had.
She's been on disability since she was 10. Now that she's turned 18,
Social Security is trying to drop her from the system.
Amanda decided to go back to Florida to be with her mom. Now she has
to appeal the complicated system all by herself. Here, she had help from
Social Services; there, she's on her own. Amanda says the whole family is
serving every day of that seven-year sentence.
