12 Smoke Signals FEBRUARY 15, 2008 1SGH330 Dear Smoke Signals: I read with sadness in your Jan. 1 issue that Everett "Bud" Farlow had passed away. I had the honor and pleasure of being his lawyer and friend. Bud was a sweet, strong and funny man. In the late 1970s (I think it was back then. I am getting old!), the younger generation of his family came to me. I then met Bud; his sister, Flora Llaneza; and his brother, Eldon. I must have looked skinny because they always filled me with cookies in Flora's southeast Portland house. They told me that even though they had been born in what was now Indian Mary Park, they still had to pay to get into the park. That was outrageous. I then researched the issue and realized that the park had been stolen from the family by the United States. Their ancestors, Umpqua Joe and Indian Mary, would make a great book and exciting movie. I remember driving down to the park with Bud and Eldon, and being taught about their days at Chemawa and in Josephine County. The park is beautiful. But the law left me with very little hope of getting the land back. I may have been able to take a good shot a lawsuit, if the Tribe had got ten onboard, but the family and I were unsuccessful in getting any help at that time. Without help, we couldn't afford to sue the county. I wish I had been able to do more. I am thankful to have known Bud Farlow.
