Columbia River Gorge Commissioner Doug Crow visited the
Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde campus on Dec. 28 to become more
familiar with the Tribe and its interests in the Gorge. Tribal members
met Crow at the Oct. 29 Future Forum for the Gorge held in The Dalles
and he expressed interest in visiting the Grand Ronde Tribe. Crow talks
with Tribal Council member Val Shelter during his visit. Crow is serving
a second term as the governor's appointee to the commission. He is a
retired businessman with degrees from Oregon State University and
Stanford. He lives near Mosier in the National Scenic Area.

Goal Oregon event
The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde campus will be one of 20 sites
in Oregon to participate in a one-day statewide effort on Saturday, Jan.
, 26, to help students and families complete the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid form. FAFSA is a need-based application for federal, state
and campus-based financial aid.
College Goal Oregon sites throughout the state will have trained volun
teers and financial aid professionals available to provide assistance and
support from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Locally, it will be held in Room 126 of the
Tribe's Adult Education Building.
Help will include completing the FAFSA worksheet, submitting an online
application and training on other educational funding opportunities.
Each site will have a drawing for one $500 education award.
Students should bring a parent or guardian, if possible; most recent
completed federal tax return; current value of assets, including cash,
checking, savings, investments and value of business or farm; Social Se
curity numbers of student and parents; driver's licenses, if any; and alien
registration card if an applicant is not a U.S. citizen.
College Goal Oregon is part of the national College Goal Sunday program
to help students access millions of available financial aid dollars. In 2007,
more than 800 students and their families participated in the first College
Goal Oregon at 15 sites.

Leann Teresa Rogers
Jan. 25, 1985 - Dec. 25, 2007
A memorial service for Tribal member
Leann Teresa Rogers of Culp Creek was held
Jan. 5 at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel
in Cottage Grove.
Miss Rogers died Dec. 25 in a motor vehicle
accident at age 22.
She was born Jan. 25, 1985, in Cottage
Grove to Bill and Arnell Houck Rogers.
She was raised in Disston, about 25 miles
outside Cottage Grove, and graduated from
high school in Cottage Grove in 2004. She
worked at Kendall Motors.
Miss Rogers also was a former Special Olympics participant. "In
terms of basketball, she was very competitive," said Michele Port
mann, a retired counselor at Cottage Grove High School who coached
Rogers' Special Olympics team. "She was a hard worker and got
along with others.
Portmann called Rogers a "dynamo" with a great attitude.
"She helped kids who caught on more slowly," Portmann said. "She
was really encouraging to the other athletes."
She enjoyed driving, riding four-wheelers, going to the beach, swim
ming, being outdoors, hiking and being with friends and family.
Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Michele Volz and
Christal Allport; two brothers, Patrick Rogers and William Rogers of
Willamina; and five nieces and nephews. She was the niece of Shelly
Houck-Kent and the great niece of Val Houck-Grant.

Carmen Lea Norwest
April 28, 1949 - Dec. 22, 2007
Tribal member Carmen Lea Norwest, 58, of Grand Ronde passed
away on Saturday, Dec. 22, in Portland.
She was born on April 28, 1949, in Klamath Falls to Marcellus J.
and Patricia Hoover. She lived in the area for 45 years and worked
as a computer specialist for Pacific Power & Light for 23 years and
for PacifiCorp. for 10 years.
She loved fishing, hunting, attending pow-wows and watching
movies. Family members said she was generous to a fault.
She moved to Grand Ronde in August to continue her battle
against liver cancer.
She is survived by her father, Marce Norwest, and stepmother,
Sharon Norwest, of Grand Ronde; brothers, Michael Cortez of
Maine, Daniel Gonzalez of Klamath Falls, David Gonzalez of Port
land, Melvin Norwest of Sheridan, and Robin and Johnny Norwest
of Grand Ronde; sisters, Marie Cortez of Portland, Leatrice Gonza
lez of Portland, Marlita Robles Gonzalez of Fairview, Jackie Brown
of Kent, Wash., Shirley Norwest of Keizer, LaDonna Norwest and
Daniele Powley of Grand Ronde, and Lyndell Norwest of Salmon
Arm, British Columbia; and 33 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother and brothers Marcellus
Norwest, Lonnie Norwest, Andrew Norwest and Lyle Johnson.
Funeral services were held Jan. 5 at Forest Lawn Cemetery
in Gresham. Bateman Carroll Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Red Gross Blood Drive
There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednes
day, Jan. 16.
The Bloodmobile will be parked outside the Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde gymnasium.

CENTER HOURS
Due to misuse, the recycle center will be open during the following hours only:
8 a.m. to 6 p.m Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. We
are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you, but we have found it
necessary to put tighter control on this service. Everyone needs to remem
ber, the center is for recycle materials only. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO
DUMP PERSONAL GARBAGE OR YARD DEBRIS AT THE SITE. Please
tell your friends and families, too. Most people respect and appreciate this
service, and we want to acknowledge that. If you see someone abusing

The workshops will be taught by Northwest Computer Learning Center
and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the computer lab in the Adult Educa
tion Building.
Cost for a workshop is $150 and eligible Tribal members can apply to
the Noncrcdit Program (formally Short Term Training) for assistance with
registration costs. Space is limited to the first 15 who register.
