TO ALL TRIBAL MEMBERS RECEIVING
MEMBER SERVICES BENEFITS
Several Tribal members have harassed both our staff and our local post
office employees. As a result, Tribal members may no longer pick up their
checks early at the Grand Ronde Post Office. Checks should be received
shortly after they are mailed on the 10th of each month. We ask all affected
Tribal members to be patient.
If you have any questions regarding changes to your Direct Deposit, please
contact Terri White in Finance at 503-879-1479. Any other questions regarding
programs, please contact Reina Nelson in Member Services at 503-879-2223.
Museum Development
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION
The Cultural Resources Collection staff would like to thank everyone who
participated in the Museum Development Community Workshop which
was designed to focus specifically on interpretive theme development and
enhancement. We gathered input at the Elders meal site, K-5 students,
6-12th graders, a visit to each of the three preschool classes, as well as an
evening communitywide meeting. Meeting with such a wide range of par
ticipants was designed to gather as much information and input as possible,
and to encourage a sense of ownership and excitement in this project from
within the Grand Ronde community. There was a great turn-out for the
community meeting, with lots of Elders and many families in attendance.
Feedback was generally positive from those who attended. Our contractors
were very pleased with the level of participation and input provided at these
meetings, especially from the children.
It is important to note that projects of equivalent scale and breadth have
taken anywhere from six to 10 years in coming to fruition. Our consultants
have said that the background work done on this project already puts
Grand Ronde ahead of that schedule. These meetings were the beginning
of many more to come, as the interpretive design of the cultural center is an
ongoing process until the doors are opened. The Tribe currently has many
great artifacts that we are centering the interpretive stories around that
are integral in telling the Tribal story. However, if anyone has artifacts
that they would like to include in the museum, please let us know. Now
is the time to gather photographs and documentation of those items.
Thank you for your continued support and participation in this exciting
endeavor.

Correction: In the Aug. 1 issue of Smoke Signals the person who took a
photo of Tribal Elder Marcella Selwyn was misidentified. The photo was
taken by Summer Youth Employee Joel Selwyn. We regret the error.
