COLLEGE
CLASSIFICATIONS
Public 2-year (Community or Junior) College: A post-secondary
institution which provides entry-level college education. Community
colleges are generally characterized by open admissions policies (anyone
can attend) and a wide range of offerings, including two-year (Associate)
degrees, transferable degrees, vocational training, certificate courses,
and community and continuing education. These colleges tend to be less
expensive than proprietary colleges or 4-year colleges or universities.
Proprietary College: A private institution operated by its owners
as a profit-making enterprise (sometimes called "private career or trade
schools"). These types of institutions offer a variety of course offerings
and degrees. Credits typically do not transfer as core curriculum to any
school, whether that be a public or private college or university, not
owned by the proprietary school.
4 YEAR COLLEGES AND BEYOND for obtaining an undergradu
ate or graduate degree.
Four-year colleges are the types of schools that most people think of
when they say the word "college." Harvard is a four-year college. So are
the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Western Oregon
University. Four-year colleges offer a comprehensive education. In other
words, you not only choose something to major in (such as business or
physics or nursing or journalism) but you also receive a well-rounded
education in other subjects. Four-year colleges also have admission re
quirements that must be met before one can start taking classes.
Public College or University: A public university is an institution of
higher education that grants degrees at the Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral
levels (depending on the institution). These institutions are typically less
expensive than private colleges or universities. They are funded by public
means through a national or regional government. Some Community or
Junior Colleges may operate as branch campuses for public universities
and offer four-year degrees in certain selected subjects.
Private College or University: A private university is a univer
sity that is run without input or control of any government entity (not
supported by state taxes). They are degree granting institutions that
provide degrees such as Bachelor, Master, or Doctorate (depending on
the institution). They retain the right to select their student body and
are funded in whole or in part by charging their students tuition rather
than with public funds, therefore their tuition costs tend to be higher
than public colleges or universities.
Undergraduate: have not obtained a Bachelor's degree
Graduate: relating to studies beyond a Bachelor's degree; seeking a
Master's, Doctorate, or Professional degree.
Have you ever wondered about the
differences in certificates and degrees?
COLLEGE CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES
Diploma: A diploma is a document issued by any educational institu
tion. It can be a certificate testifying that the recipient has successfully
completed a particular course of study or a deed conferring an academic
degree.
Certificate: A certificate is awarded for successful completion of a
specialized program of study. A certificate may be for graduate (such as
SGC - Specialized Graduate Certificate) or undergraduate programs (such
as ATC - Advanced Technical Certificate) and is usually not more than
one year in length.
Associate (2-year) Degree: The degree awarded after a two-year period
of study which can be either terminal (vocationaltechnical) or transfer (the
first two years of a bachelor's degree). Classes for this degree are 100 or
200 level and can be taken at a community or junior college.
Bachelor's (4-year) Degree: This degree is the basic undergraduate
degree offered by four-year colleges and universities, depending upon the
required program of study. A Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) requires that
a portion of the study be devoted to the arts such as languages, literature,
music, etc., while a Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) requires more math
ematics and science curriculum. Classes are 100-400 level.
Master's (1-3 years after completing Bachelor degree 5-7 years
total) Degree: A Master's degree is an academic degree usually awarded
for completion of a postgraduate or graduate course of one to three years
in duration. One must complete a Bachelor's degree before enrolling in a
Master's degree program. Classes are 500 level and higher.
Doctorate (3-5 years after completing Bachelor degree 7-9 years
total) Degree: A doctorate is an academic degree of the highest level.
Traditionally, the award of a doctorate implies recognition of the candidate
as an equal by the university faculty under which he or she has studied.
Professional (3-5 years after completing Bachelor degree 7-9
years total) Degree: This degree can be obtained after first completing
a bachelor's degree. Professional degrees are in fields such as medicine,
dentistry, veterinary medicine, or law.
