By Ron Karten At 10:30 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, June 25th, Sharon Hartley, 40, of Klamath Falls, driving east on Highway 18, crossed the center line sideswip ing Tribal member Shonn Leno, driving his Ford pickup west. Hartley ran Leno off the road doing minor damage to his 2000 F-250 Ford pickup in the pro cess, and he was not hurt. Hartley, with her 83-year-old mother in the passenger seat, continued driving east in the westbound lane on Highway 18. Then, she drove head-on into two motorcyclists Timothy Clark, 51, of Hillsboro and David Randolph, 51, of McMinnville, friends and fellow-workers killing them instantly. Both wore helmets. Randolph, according to his obituary was a skydiver who had made more than 1,000 jumps. By Ron Karten On Wednesday, July 5, all of the Tribal Council members were on hand, as well as many Elders and many care providers. People were seated under tents in the parking lot on Blacktail Drive and down the block. The sun was shining. The Grand Ronde Color Guard posted the colors. The Housing Board of Commissioners was there. Tribal Elder Leon "Chips" Tom provided the invocation. "It is time now to think about those that made it possible," said the Tribe's first Housing Authority Chair and Tribal Elder Robert Watson. "The critical thing," he said, "is the staff you have. You can have the greatest facility but you have to have the people. You have to have the philosophy. You have to have the monitoring and the training." Tribal Elder Val Grout talked about her sister, Arlene Beck, who passed on recently. "How can I stand up here and be brave enough not to cry?" she said. "Arlene Beck was my big sister. I was afraid of the dark.
