"Native people have always managed their resources wisely, whether it was catching the salmon, har vesting camas root, or hunting deer. First Nations Development Institute and the Fannie Mae Foundation have developed a cur riculum which is designed to help Native communities and their members adapt their traditional skills to the wise management of financial resources." As you work through the guide, you will learn about: Building a healthy economy Developing a spending plan Working with checking and savings accounts Understanding credit and your credit report Accessing credit Whether you want to start a business, buy a home, or pay off debt, personal financial literacy is a first step to gaining control over your financial future. NWIHA SCHOLARSHIP FOR TRIBAL YOUTH The Northwest Indian Housing Association (NWIHA) annually provides scholarships to Tribal youth, defined as Tribal members ages 24 years old or younger. The intent is to provide financial awards to youth for education and training programs at schools, col leges, job training organizations or other worthwhile organizations. Traditionally individual awards have not exceeded $1,000. Applications are available by contacting the Grand Ronde Tribal Hous ing Authority at 503-879-2401 or 1-800-422-0232 extension 2401. It's time for the AMERIND Risk Management Corporation, 2006 National Fire and Home Safety Poster Contest, for children currently in grades K through 8 (only one entry per child). All posters entered are to illustrate a fire safety theme and must be originals created by the child in crayon, markers or paint, drawn horizontally on 8.5" x 11" paper (no pencils please). This year's winner of the poster contest will receive a $2,000 savings bond in his or her name.
