Klahowya (Greetings) member,
I want to take this opportunity to extend a great big thank you for the
tremendous amount of support I received throughout this past election.
Although I will no longer be serving as the Vice-Chairman, it will be a great
honor to continue to serve the Tribe as one of your Tribal leaders as I have
done over the past nine years. The election process was time consuming,
exhausting and stressful at times. Your votes and support made it all
worthwhile. I want to let the membership rest assured that I will continue
to make decisions that I believe are in the best interest of the Tribe and
serve the needs of the Tribal membership. As I stated in my campaign
letter, our ancestors and Elders have provided us with the past, continue
to assist us in the present and have guided us in shaping our vision for
the future, but the realization of the vision lies in the hands of our people.
By supporting me in my re-election bid, I believe you have made me a part
of the vision for the future. I still believe in open communication and con
tinue to encourage Tribal members to stop by my office, drop me an e-mail
or give me a call. Looking forward to the next three years of good things
happening for our Tribe and Tribal membership. Thanks once again for
your support.

Dear Smoke Signals,
We picked up the August 15 issue of Smoke Signals at a Sheridan res
taurant recently, and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate
your work. The quality and the heartfelt passion of the writing was im
pressive and moving. We are non-Native people who are very sympathetic
but have yet a great deal to learn and we were so pleased to find Smoke
Signals available to us. I was glad to see the article on the anti-war con
ference about this country's history as war-makers, featuring Eugene
Johnson and Dino Butler and the powerful article on Leonard Peltier. Ron
Karten does indeed "put his heart and soul" into his work. And the article
on the "Healing and Unity Journey" was imbued with an encouraging
hopefulness.
Thank you again for giving us the gift of such a powerful experience in
print.
Sincerely,
Marilee Thome

On the front page of the September 15 issue Honor & Recognition issue,
we identified GED graduate Lenard Lane with his parents. His mother is
Teresa Holbrook.
In the October 1 issue, staff writer Ron Karten in one instance called new
Tribal Council member Kathleen Tom, Kathleen Tom Martin. In addition,
in some instances, he called Community Fund recipient New Avenues for
Youth, New Directions. Additionally, in the Hunting & Fishing story, he
called Rowell Creek, Rock Creek.
