Tribal Rodeo Is Horse Play

Warner and professional rodeo
clown Ike Prior had a continuous
battle of wits.
Then it was game time.
"It's time for our grand entry,"
said Warner, referring to a term
better known to cowboys as "The
Stampede."
Despite an injury to Mia
Corwin, who ended up winning
the event, the stampede was a
good way to launch the 10th An
nual Spirit Mountain Rodeo held
in Grand Ronde.
At Smoke Signal's press time,
Corwin was housed in the Intensive
Care Unit at Emanuel Hospital in
Portland.
A Flag Drill was then performed
by the Original Rodeo Bandits Drill
Team from Molalla.
The members of the Spirit Moun
tain Rodeo Board were recognized
and applauded as they made a lap
around the arena.
The rodeo was then officially
started with Bareback Riding. In
this event, cowboys jump on the
back of a bucking bronco and try to
ride it for eight seconds. The rodeo
featured all of the usual events as
detailed in the results list.
"The rodeo was quite successful,"
said Harold Lyon, Tribal Elder and
Chairman of the Spirit Mountain
Rodeo Board. "Attendance was not
what we hoped for but we were
competing with several other func
tions. There was a nominations
meeting, a memorial and I think
the weather had something to do
with it also," he said.
A rodeo in Tillamook, on the same
weekend as Spirit Mountain Ro
deo, leaves the cowboys having to
travel back and forth. They go to
the Tillamook rodeo in the morning
and come to Grand Ronde in the
evening.
Lyon has been on the rodeo board
for four years and has been riding
horses for 65 years. He will carry
the Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde flag at this year's St. Paul
Rodeo on July 1- 4.
"I would like to express my appre
ciation to the people of the board
that made the rodeo such a suc
cess," said Lyon. "I would also like
to thank Tribal Council for their
support."
