Letter to the Editor,
I would like to say how appreciative I am to the staff of Smoke Signals. We
take so much for granted and never stop long enough to look at the good things
happening. This newsletter and the staff have won many, many awards for
their work and they never let their ego corrupt them. We do have the best
newsletter in the Northwest. I was one of the first to criticize the participation
of our Tribal members at the Rose Garden Hockey Game, as I felt that for as
much time as the dancers put into dressing in regalia for a five-minute presen
tation was not enough, it was then that the Editor and staffexplained to me why
we were only allowed five-minutes, because of the ice melting and the tempera
ture needed to be maintain or the ice would be no good. It made me realize that
there is so much behind the scenes that we are not aware of. The staff of Smoke
Signals make every effort and go beyond to accommodate our Tribal members so
that they can relax and enjoy many events that we would not ordinarily be able
to do. Marty goes beyond 100 percent to make sure everyone will have what
they need. I do not see any slackers in that department. They try their very
best to produce an interesting, informative, respectful paper.
With Gratitude,
Joyce Kirk

Dear Smoke Signals,
I am writing in regards to the article in the April 15, 2005 issue of the
Smoke Signals, page 5, concerning the report of the April General Coun
cil Meeting that was held in Eugene, Oregon.
The Grand Ronde Tribe's Restoration roll of 1984, which to my knowl
edge numbers 1,101 Tribal Members 1) contained "all" of the names on
the Termination Roll, whether living or dead; and not just those alive in
1983. 2) contained the names of those who were able to enroll in the Tribe
before the Restoration Roll was closed sometime in 1984; and not just
those added to the rolls in 1983 at the time of the Tribe's Restoration.
I would like to say that I have not seen any of my benefits reduced; in
fact it has been quite the opposite since my name was place on the Resto
ration Act Roll of 1984.
I would also like to say that there has been no study done that would
indicate that "proposed changes" to our Enrollment policy would "double
the number of existing members." It is my belief that once those who
have been denied since 1999 are allowed to enroll, we would not see much
more of an increase in our membership than what we now experience.
It is also my belief that we need to address our membership require
ments issue once and for all so we can move forward on other important
issues that our Tribe faces.
I would like to hear from anyone who would like to discuss "any issue" of
the Grand Ronde Tribe with me.
Sincerely,
Leroy Good

Dear Family and Friends,
A thank you with much love to my five children and their families for
the fantastic birthday party. To Bob and Annie for the slide show, it was
great seeing all our family and friends like Jim and Lorretta from
Brookings. Lorretta said we have been friends for 43 years. Thanks to
the children's friends from high school that were there. I had so many
kids all sizes and colors who called me mom and I loved everyone of them.
Thank you for all coming. I love you all.
Thanks,
Val Grout
