Grand Ronde People Reach Out To
Tsunami Victims With Donation
Tribal Council approves $10,000 donation to Red Cross.
By Brent Merrill
"We're trying to reach out
to those people with the most
need," said Grand Ronde
Tribal Chairwoman Cheryle
Kennedy of the Tribe's
$10,000 donation to the
American Red Cross'
Willamette Chapter.
The Tribal Council donation
to the International Relief
Fund is intended to be dis
tributed to those with the
most need in the hardest hit
areas like rural Thailand.
"We want to address the ba
sic needs like water," said
Kennedy. "We want to show
them that we care."
Tribal leadership was
moved by the plight of the vic
tims of the latest and possi
bly most significant tragedy
in modern human history.
As the death toll grows to
nearly 200,000 lives lost, the
stories of the survivors can
tug at your heart. After read
ing the news accounts, mem
bers of the Tribal Council de-
Tribal Council Vice
Chairman Reyn Leno
cided to join local efforts to
help and chose the Red Cross
as the avenue to do it.
"I think it shows that we
are trying to do our part,"
said Tribal Vice Chairman
Reyn Leno. "Although our
main focus is the well-being
of our people and our com
munity, we have compassion.
This is about the big picture
we're reaching out across
the world to those in need."
