Dearest friends,
I will be resigning my position as Education Spe
cialist for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
My last day with the Tribe will be December 17,
2004.
I am appreciative to have been able to work in a
position that allowed me to assist wonderful people,
such as yourself, in your effort to go to school. This
position has been extremely satisfying and a won
derful opportunity for me to meet talented, inspir
ing Tribal members.
I will surely miss working with you and appreciate the time I have shared
with you. I sincerely wish you success in whatever you do. I hope that
one day you may think about and have the opportunity to work with our
Tribe as I did. Working with other Tribal members has been an experi
ence I would not have been able to receive elsewhere.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to assist you. I will miss all of
you. Good luck and best of life.
April Campbell

Dear Smoke Signals,
On November 1, 2004, you published an article in Smoke Signals rec
ommending your readers boycott Red Robin restaurants because of the
cartoon publication distributed by Gerry Kingen. For the record, Mr.
Kingen has not been associated with Red Robin since 1997. While we
can't re-write history, recommending that your readers boycott Red Robin
restaurants is unfair to the great people who work and patronize our
restaurants.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Snyder
President, Chairman & CEO
Editors Note:
Smoke Signals' November 1, 2004 article did not suggest that Gerry
Kingen has had a leadership role at Red Robin since 1997. However,
staff writer Ron Karten's research indicated that Kingen continues to
hold a substantial amount of Red Robin stock, and in that regard, it
is reasonable for the newspaper to provide its readership with infor
mation to effectively fight Kingen's offensive (and losing) campaign in
support of Washington's Initiative 892, and to let him know that of
fensive future campaigns will also be opposed vigorously here in Grand
Ronde.
In a telephone conversation with Red Robin CEO Michael Snyder
following publication of the article, Snyder noted that Red Robin took
no public position on 1-892. The company remains concerned about
and committed to the communities it serves, he said. And, he added,
this is not the first time that Red Robin has had to smooth feathers
ruffled by Kingen's activities.

Correction: Due to a source's error, in a caption for the "Circle of Weav
ing" article in the December 1 issue of Smoke Signals, we reported that the
cedar bark basket collection belongs to Nisqually-Cheh alis Tribal Elder Evelyn
Penn. In fact, it belongs to Grand Ronde Tribal mei aber t r ie Graves.
