New Employee:
The Grand Ronde Health & Wellness
Center is happy to announce the addi
tion of Dr. Joseph Whitson to the Medi
cal Clinic Staff beginning August 2,
2004. Dr. Whitson's special interests in
public health will be a tremendous asset
to the Health & Wellness Center. In
1992, he earned his doctorate in osteo
pathic medicine from the University of
North Texas Health Science Center in
Fort Worth and went on to complete his
master's degree in public health at East
Tpnnpsspfi State University in Johnson
City in 2000. From 1992 to 1995, he completed his family practice
residency at East Tennessee State where he was awarded "Resident
physician of the Year" for his involvement in extra-curricular com
munity health projects. From 1999 to 2000, he was awarded a rural
medicine fellowship at East Tennessee State.
Dr. Whitson was in family practice in Lander, Wyoming from Oc
tober 2000 to August 2002 and then moved to Salem, Oregon and
began work for the Salem Clinic at their Primary Health Care Clinic.
Dr. Whitson believes that learning who each patient is, where they
are coming from, and what is going on in their lives is essential to
educating and motivating people regarding healthier behaviors. "I
believe the doctor-patient relationship is a partnership m which the
physician and the patient share responsibility as they work together
toward the common goal of achieving optimal health for the patient."
After hours Dr. Whitson likes spending the majority of his time
with his wife and 3-year-old son, Ben. In those rare moments away
from family he likes a variety of outdoor sports including mountain
biking, cross-country skiing, canoeing and windsurfing. He also en
joys creative writing and playing classical guitar.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Whitson to his new practice. We
are excited to have him as part of our H&WC provider team.
EMMA'S PROJECT
By Carol Posey of The Newsguard (Lincoln City)
Emma Haft, a special child who lived to be 12 V2, and in whose memory,
several on-going fund-raisers have helped provide back packs filled with
school supplies and toiletries for Lincoln County students. School was
Emma's favorite place to be and she would have spent 24 hours a day
there if she could says Rachelle McMaster, Emma's sister. So establishing
"Emma's Project" for buying school supplies seems a fitting memorial "to
this loving and affectionate" child. Emma was born on February 23, 1988,
with Downs Syndrome and a hole in her heart. But from the beginning,
Emma acted as if these problems with which she had come in the world
were only minor obstacles for her to overcome. Doctors told Emma's par
ents, Michael and Linda Haft, she would probably only live two months.
Some time later, they announced she might live to be two years old. But
she exceeded all expectations after celebrating her second birthday,"
Rachelle says, smiling. "The doctors finally admitted they didn't know
how long she would live." Just before the age of three, Emma had a
stroke. Afterwards, she could no longer speak or walk, but did not stop her
from communicating love for life and her family with her expressive eyes
and bright smile. Giving up on life was never an option for Emma, Rachelle
says. By the time Emma passed away, she was walking "with assis
tance ," Rachelle adds, "but walking." She was an inspiration to every
one, and taught us what real love and compassion is all about," Rachelle
adds softly. On June 14, 2000, Emma let go her struggles in North Lin
coln Hospital.
