Next Step: College Bulldog track star, Tribal member and senior Caitlin Zimbrick, flies over the high jump bar on her way to a 5th place finish at state. She
cleared the bar at 5'2", the same height as her younger sister, Tribal member and Bulldog sophomore, Meghan Zimbrick, who finished in 6th place. The winning jump
this year was by Gold Beach senior Amanda Boice, who cleared the bar at 5'5". This year, the state tournament was held at Western Oregon University, May 2 1 -22.
Willamina Track & Field
By Ron Karten
This year has seen the largest number of track athletes "that any
body can remember," said Willamina Track Coach Chris Rankin. "We
had 40 for the last track meet." Last year, the team fielded 30-35,
according to Rankin. "Five years ago," he said, "we only had nine."
Rankin attributes the growing successes to "good coaching all the
way up from middle school." He also credited Tribal member Carrie
Zimbrick, who also coaches the team. "And hopefully," he said, "I've
had something to do with it."
"Our top male athlete is Bryan Fendall," said Rankin. "lie runs the
100 (meter dash), the long jumps and the short (4x100 meters) relay,
lie throws the javelin. He's an all-purpose kind of guy."
"Caitlin Zimbrick is definitely our top girl. Both are top people in
the state. Bryan tied for third in the 100; Cait's in the same situation,
right at the top in the long jump, second in the high jump, and she
also does the triple jump. She's even been running a little in the
4x400 relay."
"It's been a pretty good season so far. We're doing quite well," said
Rankin. "We haven't won one yet, but we've been second almost ev
ery time. Overall, we're doing very well." In four meets, the team's
lowest finish has been third, and in some of the meets, we've been
competing with eight teams. The girls have taken second every time."
At state, the Bulldog boys finished 14th overall, and the Lady Dawgs
finished in 24th place, both among Oregon's 2A schools.
