The Confederated Tribes of
Grand Ronde's Cultural Resources
Department, in cooperation with
the Mission Mill Museum Associa
tion, have collaborated on the re
printing of Dr. Harold Mackey's
book, The Kalapuyans, long one of
the most acces- UtV-
sible resources for
information and
history on the
Natives of the
Willamette Val
ley. The book had
been out of print
for 30 years, was
difficult to locate
and in most cases
the original bind
ings had fallen
apart.
The book has
been re-released
with the permis
sion of the
Mackey family in
a second edition with a new cover,
new photographs and a new after
ward explaining the Grand Ronde
Tribal perspective. There is also an
updated bibliography with more
current, accurate sources.
"It's meant to be a starting point
for people who want to learn more

about Willamette Valley Natives,
linguistics, or tbe Tribe. We clari

rated on some issues from a Tribal
perspective, rather than a settler's
perspective," said Tribal Cultural
Collection Specialist Lindy Trolan,
vl who worked
closely with the
Mission Mill
staff on the
project.
The book, first
published in
1974, is a com
pilation of early
records, treaty
negotiations,
chief speeches,
archeological
records and
court docu
ments. It was
originally
planned as a
source for teach
ers on local
Tribes of the Willamette Valley.
Mackey gathered material from
museum archives and local records,
putting them together in book
form, while adding very little of his
