With sadness, we say goodbye to Tribal
Elder Merle Leno, long a Tribal leader and
model for all Tribal members. Merle was a
member of Tribal Council, Chairman of
both the Health Commission and Health
Authority. He was active for many years
on the Pow-wow Committee. A Vietnam
Veteran, Merle also served with distinction
on the Tribal Color Guard. He was active
in such important efforts as the Tribe's Restoration and little league.
We all are better for his life, and we will miss him every day.
Merle E. Leno
May 9, 1932 April 2, 2004
Merle Leno, a leader with the Tribe, passed away on April 2 at
Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. He was 71. Leno
was born May 9, 1932 in Grand Rondo. He married his wife, Claudia,
on June 26, 1965 in Warrenton. He worked for Zimbrick Logging for
many years. He last worked as a bingo supervisor at Spirit Mountain
Casino in Grand Ronde. He served as a member of the Grand Ronde
Tribal Council for many years and as chairman of the Health Com
mittee and Pow-wow Committee. He enjoyed attending races at the
Lebanon Speedway and helped sponsor Todd Shandy's race car. Sur
vivors include his wife, Claudia of Grand Ronde; a son, Greg Leno of
Willamina; daughters; Michelle Kelley and Emma Leno, both of Grand
Ronde; brothers, Orville of Sheridan, Russ of Grand Ronde and Bud
of Los Angeles, California; a sister, Margaret Peters of Lebanon; and
five grandchildren. Services were held Monday at the Sheridan Bap
tist Church with burial in the Tribal cemetery.
Timothy Leonard Ham
June 28, 1986 April 1, 2004
Timothy Ham, 17, of Sheridan died April 1. He was born June 28,
1986 in Port Angeles, Wash. He attended school in Sheridan. He
loved to hunt and fish. Survivors include his father, Alan of Sheridan,
and grandmother, Joyce Ham of Portland. He was preceded in death
by his mother, Sharon. Services were held at the Tribal cemetery.
Lucille Jeffers Lanning
September 6, 1928 February 10, 2004
Lucille Lanning passed away on February 10, 2004 at her home in Crooked
River Ranch, Oregon of natural causes. She was 75.
She was born in Bucoda, Washington to Melvin and Edna Michael JefTers.
She graduated from Crow high school in Crow, Oregon. She married Pete
Lanning on July 27, 1979 in Elko, Nevada.
She worked as a bartender for the VFW Fireside Lounge and retired in
1995.
She belonged to the VFW Post 4108, American Legion Post 44 auxil
iary and the Moose Lodge 1801 chapter.
She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family.
She is survived by husband Pete and 4 children: Chester Purdy, Rhonda
Purdy, Nancy Freel of Crooked River Ranch and Troy Purdy of Redmond.
Seven grandchildren, three brothers, Ivan and Carl Jeffers of Eugene and
Dale Jeffers of Elmira; Three sisters, Rose Teem, of Laytonville, California,
Hazel Adams of Lewiston, Idaho and Elsie Cummings of Lebanon, Oregon.
Services were held at the VFW Lodge February 16, 2004.
Burial was at Deschutes Memorial Garden of Bend.
Lucille Lanning was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
Marvin James Hoff
May 28, 1939 February 11, 2004
Marvin Hoff lost his battle with cancer on Febru
ary 11, 2004. Marv leaves behind his wife, Tribal
Elder Floriene Vivette Hoff of Beaverton, Oregon,
daughters; Colette Abdie, Renee Gordon, Nicole Hoff
and son Mitch Hoff. Six gradsons; Taylor and Cole
Abdie, Nathan Hoff, Jared Hoff, twins Trevor and
Nolan Gordon. He will be missed by many nieces
and nephews, great nieces and nephews, brother-in-laws,
sister-in-laws and father-in-law Tribal Elder
Leonard Vivette.
Marvin enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time at the beach with his
family and friends. Marvin will be missed at our Grand Ronde Pow-wow for
his volunteer time he spent selling t-shirts at the Pow-wow t-shirt booth.
Marvin joins his mother and father, brother Bob, an infant daugther, brother-in-law
Chuck Vivette, nephew Scott Galligher, nephew Mark Cook and oth
ers dear to the Hoff family. We love you Marv. Peace.

The family would like to thank Gene LaBonte and Russ Leno for their
assistance at the grave site. Margo Mercier for her prompt assistance with

Lisa for helping preparing and serving the nice meal after the services.

Dennis W. Lake
October 29, 1958 March 25, 2004
Dennis Lake died March 25, 2004, in his home in Grand Ronde. He
was 45. He was born October 29, 1958, in Stayton, where he lived
until moving to Toledo in 1964. He attended Toledo High School, then
worked for Oregon Oyster after leaving school. He also worked in
reforestration for several Lincoln County companies. Mr. Lake moved
from Toledo to Willamina in 1987 and began working in lumber mills.
He moved to Grand Ronde in 2000. He loved woodworking, collecting
dragons and wizards, and reading science fiction.
"Dennis should be remembered for how he touched people's lives and
his wonderful laugh," his family said.
Survivors include his mother Wilda Lake of Willamina; his father,
Arthur Lake of Willamina; a son, Nathanial Lake of Bend; two step
sons, Seth Mercier and Winston Mercier, both of Grand Ronde; a fos
ter daughter, Jordan Mercier of Grand Ronde; four brothers, Ted Lake
of Willamina, Frank Lake and Pat Lake, both of Grand Ronde, and
Mike Lake of Newport; and a sister Kathy Hannemann of North Bend
Eva Rosetta Pichette Renquist
December 10, 1907 January 3, 2004
Eva Rosetta Pichette Renquist went home to be with God on January 3,
2004 in Roseburg, Oregon. She was 96 years old. Eva came from a family of
early Oregon Pioneers. She was the great-granddaughter of Louis Pichette,
a trapper for the Hudsons's Bay Company who was one of the first settlers
on the French Prairie in the Oregon Territory and his Indian wife Marguer
ite Bercier. Her maternal great grandparents were Gustavus Spooner and
his wife Edith Belle Spooner who homesteaded on Spooner Mountain outside
ofSoutherlin.
Eva was born to Joseph Prosper Pichette and his wife Edith Belle Spooner
Pichette on December 10, 1907 just outside of Oakland. She was the fourth
of six children, four girls and two boys.
Eva loved to be surrounded by people of all ages and always enjoyed a
party. She was lively, stubborn and independent all of her life.
She leaves behind her daughter Laverne, four grandchildren and numer
ous great grandchildren, one sister Peggy and her many nieces, nephews,
great nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Roger, sisters Rose and
Edna and her brothers Bert and Carl greet her in heaven.
Temporary On-Call Fire fighter

April 27, 2004 - 5 p.m.
Natural Resources' fire program is currently accepting applications for
On Call Fire Fighters. These positions will be called active when fire crews
are needed. Duties include handline construction, mop up work, Initial at
tack, and rehabilitation duties. Assignments are typically two weeks long.
Must be wiling to work long hours outdoors in fire conditions. Applicants
must be able to live in a camp environment for up to two weeks and be able
to pass a pack test. The pack test is a test of endurance practiced through
out all wildland fire agencies. Applicants must be able to walk 3 miles in
under 45 minutes with a 451b backpack. Applicants must have good com
munication skills, be able to work well with others on a crew, and enjoy the
outdoors.
Requirements: All leather work boots with Vibram sole. Pack test
completion, successful completion of Fire Guard School, pre-employment
drug test and criminal background check. Valid Drivers license is strongly
preferred.
