Safety First Smoke Signal's Photographer Peta Tinda caught this shot of Tribal member Nicholas Atanacio and his friends walking home from school on a narrow
shoulder of Grand Ronde Road. With the big truck coming up behind, the image became an important part of the Tribe's application for a grant to widen and improve
the street. The resulting $500,000 federal block grant is expected to be finalized soon and Grand Ronde Road is now slated for a two-year $2 million expansion. Safety
features will include a wider road, new crosswalks, sidewalks and bicycle lanes.

thought it would be a good idea to widen
the road. Nearly half of the non-Na-
