2 JANUARY 1, 2004 Smoke Signals Ms Dear Editor, We don't always acknowledge the positives in our community, so I wanted to say "good job" and "thank you" to the staff members responsible for overseeing this year's revenue distribution. I want to thank Chris Leno and Liz Ieno and the rest of the staff for being kind and courteous. ;I only had to stand in line a few minutes and I noticed things were being run smooth. I appreciate it. Thank you, Tribal Elder Merle Holmes Roll 257 Dear Smoke Signals, Hello my fellow Tribal members. I would like to take some time to say hello to my family and friends from here in Iraq. My name is Frank 1 1. Hostler II. I am with the 52nd Engineering Battalion Company B, 2nd Platoon, 4 th Sqaud as a combat and Con struction Engineer (from Albany, Oregon). We have been deployed since February and in Iraq since April. Every now and then I get news from home, read ing the Smoke Signals I see the young ones who will guide us someday, be our briefcase warriors to the housing development welcoming people back home. It's good to see our Tribal members being taken care of from education to small business opportunities. We truly have a strong future. We have come a long way from standing in line for our "commods." The different Tribes and bands working together for our survival. Being in a country where i am not the Native has taken sometime adjusting. It is unknown when I will be leaving. Who will take my place. What I do know is I miss my family and people. Life over here has changed so many people's lives, both family and soildiers are put to the test. For those involved know that freedom is not free, it is taken; for those who will stand for it will be watched very close. There is so much more to do here before it's all said and done. What will be accomplished? By who? There are a number of Natives I run across from time to time. It's good to talk with each other, if time allows. My fellow members I ask you if you are proud of what, who you are, look into your children's eyes and tell them you love them! In closing, if you are going to pray, pray for those who will never be able to see their friends, family or wife again. Take care all, Frank II. Hostler II Roll 2530 Editor's Note: Come home soon Frank. Come home safe. We miss you and we are proud of you. Dear Smoke Signals, I read with great interest the article Ron Karten did in the Dec. 15, 2003 Smoke Signals. Fourteen years ago we lost a twenty year old son to drink ing and driving (himself) an i it lives with us every day. The article about Brad Leno was excellent and puts a perspective on alcohol and speed that every young person should read carefully. I didn't know Brad and only knew one of the boys in that accident, but felt the pain for their families. We know Lonnie and the Bailers and we can relate to the pain and loss they have felt. Well done Ron and Smoke Signals' staff. This is a timely story every young person should be compelled to read and think about seriously. Thanks for a great piece of journalism.
